Market Overview:
The global stable isotopes market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for stable isotopes from various applications such as scientific research, medical, and industrial applications. Additionally, the growing awareness about the benefits of using stable isotopes is also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, 2H accounted for majority share in 2017 and is projected to maintain its dominance during forecast period. This can be attributed to its widespread use across various industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food & beverage industry and others.
Product Definition:
A stable isotope is an isotope of a chemical element that does not undergo radioactive decay. The most stable isotopes are the ones with the fewest neutrons in their nucleus.
2H:
2H is an isotope with a half-life of 13.6 hours, which was first discovered in 1932 by American Chemist Charles H. Cooley and Swiss Chemist Hubert Beckers at the University of Zurich. It was later named as the second hydrogen isotope after deuterium owing to its similar properties such as neutral taste, boiling point and molecular weight.
13C:
13C is the name given to a type of carbon atom with three outer electrons. The most common 13C isotope is methane (CH4) which has one extra electron than normal hydrogen. Methane has been a major source of natural gas for many years and accounts for around 8% of the total energy produced from all sources in the world.
Application Insights:
The application segment includes scientific research, medical, industrial and others. The other applications include agriculture and food production, environmental monitoring as well as geology. Scientific research is expected to be the largest application segment over the forecast period owing to increasing R&D activities across various institutions in order to expand its application base.
Increasing demand for technologically advanced products with enhanced performance has driven the development of new sources of stable isotopes which are used in industrial applications including pharmaceuticals and food additives among others.
Regional Analysis:
North America accounted for the largest share of global stable isotopes market in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period as well due to increasing R&D activities and healthcare spending coupled with rising prevalence of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, & cardiovascular disorders. In addition, high adoption rate of technologically advanced medical treatments are further anticipated to drive the demand for stable isotopes in North America.
Asia Pacific is projected to be one of the fastest-growing regions during the forecast period owing to growing health concerns among people leading towards increased expenditure on healthcare products and services along with government initiatives promoting healthy lifestyles among population groups especially youth. Increasing awareness regarding various available treatment options along with favorable reimbursement policies are some factors that can be attributed toward rapid growth experienced by this regional market during recent years. Moreover, availability of a large number nuclear reactors across Asian countries including India & China is also expected favorably impact overall industry growth over next eight years or so (until 2030).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for stable isotopes in biomedical research and drug development
- Rising application of stable isotopes in food and beverage industry
- Growing popularity of stable isotope labeling techniques
- Proliferation of nuclear facilities across the globe
- Technological advancements in mass spectrometry
