A surface acoustic wave delay line is a type of acoustic waveguide that uses sound waves to transport data. The delay line consists of a series of parallel metal plates that are spaced apart by a distance equal to the wavelength of the acoustic waves being used. When an audio signal is sent through the delay line, it will be reflected off each plate in turn and then recombined at the end. This process delays the arrival time of the audio signal by a specific amount, which can be used to create digital copies or recordings without having to use traditional storage methods such as tapes or discs.
