Market Overview:
The global surface active agents market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for personal care products and home care products. In addition, the growing awareness about hygiene and cleanliness is also driving the demand for surface active agents. The global surface active agents market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, it is divided into anionic surfactant, cationic surfactant, zwitterionic surfactant, and non-ionic surfactant. The anionic surfactants segment dominates the global surface active agents market due to their high efficiency in removing dirt and oil from surfaces. On the basis of application, it is classified into emulsion stabilization & formulation; solubilization; wetting agent; blistering agent; other applications such as textile processing & finishing agent,, agricultural adjuvant,, metal working fluid additive,.and household cleaning product additive).and pharmaceuticals.
Product Definition:
Surface active agents are substances that reduce the surface tension of a liquid. This makes the liquid more easily spread out, which is important for many industrial and consumer products.
Anionic Surfactant:
Anionic surfactant is a type of surface active agent. It has an ionic group (–CO–) and a long aliphatic chain. The general formula for anionic surfactants is R(+)-SAR- where, R represents the rest of the molecule which can be linear or branched and SAR represents the anion.
Cationic Surfactant:
Cationic surfactants are amphiphilic organic compounds containing both hydrophobic group (tail) and hydrophilic groups (head). The compound is usually made up of alkyl chains. Cationic surfactant has anionic character due to presence of -OH, -Cl or -Br in the molecule. These compounds are used as detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents and foaming agents among other applications.
Application Insights:
Surface active agents find applications in various sectors including personal care, food & beverages, textiles, and others. Personal care was the largest application segment in 2016 and is projected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The increasing use of surfactants for cleaning products such as soaps or shampoos is one of the key factors driving their demand in this sector. Surfactants are also used for enhancing skin¢â‚¬â„¢s ability to retain moisture by reducing oiliness or making skin look matte. This factor along with growing consumer awareness regarding healthy lifestyle practices will drive market growth over the forecast period.
Food & beverage followed personal care as second-largest application segment owing to rising demand from bakery.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global surface active agents market in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to rapid industrialization and increasing population in emerging economies such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. This has led to an increase in consumer spending on personal care products which will further drive the regional market over the next eight years.
The Asia Pacific was followed by North America which accounted for a revenue share of 23% in 2017 owing to high consumption of surfactants across various application sectors including cosmetics, food processing & packaging as well as other industries that involve water-based solutions such as HVAC & refrigeration and cleaning products. Europe is also anticipated to witness considerable growth due its growing pharmaceutical industry coupled with rising demand for biopharmaceuticals research activities within Germany will drive this regional market at a steady pace over the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for surface active agents in end-use industries such as textiles, detergents, and personal care products.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using surface active agents in various applications.
- Growing investments by key players in research and development to develop new and innovative products.
- Technological advancements that have led to the development of more efficient and effective surface active agents products.
