Market Overview:
The global synthetic aerogel market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for aerogels from various end-use industries such as oil and gas, building insulation, transportation, aerospace and defense materials, and other applications. In terms of type, the global synthetic aerogel market is segmented into aerogel felt, powder, and other types. Aerogel felt is expected to account for a major share of the global synthetic aerogel market during the forecast period owing to its high thermal insulation properties. In terms of application, oil and gas accounted for a major share of the global synthetic aerogel market in 2017.
Product Definition:
A synthetic aerogel is a porous, ultralight material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. It is among the lightest solid materials known, and it can be produced in large quantities.
Aerogel Felt:
Aerogel felt is a type of synthetic aerogel that has been developed to provide the feel of natural wool. It is made from polyacrylonitrile fibers and exhibits superior properties such as high thermal conductivity, low density, and low viscosity. Aerogel Felt can be used in various applications including insulation for hot & cold beverages, packaging for pharmaceuticals or food products along with cosmetics packaging owing to its non-corrosive nature.
Powder:
Powder is a dry, granular solid material that is made from fine particles of the same material. It can be produced using synthetic materials such as polymers and inorganic compounds. Powder has high surface area and low volume which increases its reactivity towards other substances. The most commonly used raw materials for producing powder are polymer or inorganic compound based, which are mixed with water to form a slurry; this mixture then undergoes spray drying to produce the final product.
Application Insights:
Building insulation was the largest application segment in 2016 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. Aerogel is used as a insulating material in buildings owing to its excellent thermal and acoustic properties. It can be used for soundproofing, fire protection, space heating or cooling, and air conditioning applications. In addition, it finds several other uses including insulation of pipes in hydropower generation plants or tunnels on account of its high dielectric strength.
The oil & gas industry has been one of the major consumers of synthetic fibers due to their ability to reduce drag while increasing lift forces on drilling equipment such as helicopters and airplanes carrying liquid hydrocarbons at high temperatures without any risk of spills during transportation operations owing to their lightweight property along with other benefits such as increased fuel efficiency which helps operators conserve natural resources while operating more efficiently thereby driving demand further over the coming years.
Regional Analysis:
Europe accounted for the largest market share of over 35% in 2016. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period owing to increasing demand from various end-use industries, such as aerospace and defense, building and construction, automotive, energy and power.
The presence of major aircraft manufacturers including Airbus S.A., Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc., Dassault Aviation SA; Embraer S.A.; Alenia Aermacchi; Augusta Westland; AgustaWestland Ltd.; Eurocopter Group Inc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for lightweight and energy-efficient materials in various end-use industries such as aerospace, construction, automotive, and shipping
- Growing investments in R&D activities for the development of new applications of synthetic aerogel
- Rising awareness about the benefits of synthetic aerogel among consumers and businesses
- Proliferation of nanotechnology that is aiding in the development of better quality synthetic aerogels
- Increasing use of composites containing synthetic aerogel to improve performance
