Product Definition:
Tin is a chemical element with the symbol Sn and atomic number 50. It is a soft, malleable, ductile metal with a low melting point, and a relatively low boiling point. Tin shows amphoteric properties; it dissolves in acidic solutions to form stannous ions, but also dissolves in alkaline solutions to form stannate ions. Tin resists corrosion by water and air because it forms thin films of oxide that protect the metal surface.
Pyrogenic Process:
Pyrogenic processes are the chemical reactions that take place between pyrolysis products and other substances. The most common example of pyrogenic process is found in wood burning stoves or fireplaces, where creosote (a product of wood combustion) reacts with iron in the presence of heat to form a black substance called cenit copal which has properties similar to those of enitracetone.
Electrolytic Process:
The electrolytic process is used to extract tin metal from ores. It involves the use of an electrolyte solution which is commonly a sulfuric acid solution, and cathode ray tubes or cell batteries as power sources. The chemical reactions involved in this process are mainly oxidation and reduction, followed by the deposition of tin onto a cloth or paper which is then washed to get rid of impurities present thereon.
Application Insights:
Solder was the largest application segment and accounted for a volume share of over 40.0% in 2017. The product is widely used in solder manufacturing as it has excellent electrical properties, high thermal shock resistance, and good soldering ability. Moreover, its price is relatively higher when compared to other metals; however, its price has decreased significantly due to increased production capacity of tinplate across the world.
Tin-based chemicals are manufactured using either pyrolytic or electrolytic process depending upon the desired level of purity required by the final consumer. High demand for such chemicals from various end-use industries including automotive & transportation is expected to drive growth over the forecast period thereby contributing towards overall market growth during this period. Other applications include use as an alloy with copper (for making wires & cables) and zinc (for making car batteries).
