Market Overview:
The global titanium minerals market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market was valued at US$ 7,811.0 Mn in 2017 and is projected to reach US$ 13,746.4 Mn by 2030. Titanium minerals are used in various applications such as defense, metal finishing, medical and consumer products among others. The growth of the global titanium minerals market can be attributed to the increasing demand for titanium dioxide (TiO2) in paints & coatings and plastics industries across the globe. Based on type, the global titanium minerals market has been segmented into titanium concentrate, titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4), titanium sponge, ferrotitanium and others. Titanium concentrate held a major share of the global TiO2 pigment market in 2017 owing to its low cost as compared to other forms of TiO2 pigments such as TiCl4 and sponge form of titania . However , with increase use o f high-quality rutile ore for production o f synthetic rutile , th ere is an increas ing trend towards conversion o f concentrates int o higher-grade ti tanium products . This would lead t o an increasin g demand for ti tanium concentrates over th e forecast period .
Product Definition:
Titanium minerals are a group of minerals that contain the element titanium. Titanium is a transition metal with a silver-white color and is found in several mineral forms including ilmenite, rutile, and anatase. These minerals have a variety of uses including as pigment, in steelmaking, and in various medical applications.
Titanium Concentrate:
Titanium concentrates are a commercial form of titanium dioxide, which is produced from the reduction of hexachloroplatinate. It consists of 6% to 20% content of the element by weight and has a high refractive index. Titanium dioxide can be divided into anatase, brookite, and rutile types on the basis of their appearance as well as properties.
Titanium Tetrachloride:
Titanium tetrachloride is a chemical compound of titanium and four chlorine. It is a highly toxic, odorless, tasteless liquid that dissolves in water and alcohol. The major application of the chemical is to extract titanium from its ore's by using an electrolytic cell which involves charging the cell with Cl2 gas produced from hydrochloric acid (HCL) solution.
Application Insights:
The market is segmented by application into defense, metal finishing, medical, consumer products and others. The defense application dominated the overall industry in terms of revenue share in 2017. Titanium minerals are used for manufacturing aircraft components including landing gear doors, control surfaces on the wings and fuselage as well as jet engine components that operate at high temperatures.
Demand from aerospace & defense applications is projected to witness a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing military spending across countries such as China India and U.S., which is likely to propel product demand over the forecast period. Rising importance of titanium for manufacturing lightweight yet strong aircraft parts coupled with growing aviation sector will drive demand over next seven years particularly in Asia Pacific region where most of titanium production goes towards meeting this requirement thereby driving regional market growth significantly during this period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global titanium minerals market in 2017 and accounted for over 45% of the total revenue share. The region is expected to witness significant growth on account of rising demand from various end-use industries, such as automotive, aerospace & defense, construction, consumer goods and others.
The presence of major automobile manufacturers in China has resulted in high product demand from both primary and secondary sectors including ancillary parts such as fasteners, engine covers/bonnets/hoods/seats etc. Rising investments by these companies to develop advanced vehicles with enhanced features are likely to propel industry expansion over the forecast period.
Europe was estimated at USD X million in 2017 owing to high consumption levels coupled with growing applications sector mainly metal finishing which includes surface treatment products like chromium plating solution for industrial machinery.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as construction, automotive and aerospace due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance properties.
- Rising production of titanium dioxide in China and other countries owing to the growing demand for pigments in various applications such as paints, plastics and coatings.
- Growing popularity of titanium alloys in the medical industry for implants, prostheses and other surgical applications due to their biocompatibility properties.
- Technological advancements that have led to the development of new grades of titanium minerals with enhanced properties for specific applications.
