Market Overview:

The global ultra high purity hydrogen market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for ultra high purity hydrogen in various applications such as chemistry, semiconductor, metallurgy, aerospace, medical and others. Additionally, the growing demand for ultrapure hydrogen in North America and Asia Pacific is also propelling the growth of this market. However, stringent government regulations related to emissions are restraining the growth of this market. Some of the major players operating in this market are Air Liquide (France), Praxair (US), Linde AG (Germany), Messer Group GmbH (Germany) and Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (Japan).

Global Ultra High Purity Hydrogen Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Ultra high purity hydrogen is a hydrogen gas that has been purified to 99.9999% or greater. It is often used in the semiconductor and electronics industries as a cleaning and etching agent. Ultra high purity hydrogen can also be used as a fuel for vehicles and spacecraft.

5N:

5N is the pressure level at which hydrogen has reached its phase transition point. At normal atmospheric pressure, the gas is in a liquid state; however, at higher pressures it changes into a gaseous form. The term was originated from condensed matter physics and refers to the number of times that molecular hydrogen can be compressed by a factor of 5 (that is, up to 20) before it changes into an impure form no longer capable of being analyzed with conventional techniques.

6N:

6N is the allotrope of hydrogen which has six full bonds and no double or triple bonds. It is also referred to as octatride because it has an even number of carbon atoms. 6N does not exist in nature, but can be produced by heating neutral water with acid or alkali. The most common way to produce 6N is by treating normal molecular hydrogen with nitric acid/ammonium nitrate mixture (HNO3).

Application Insights:

The chemistry segment dominated the global ultra high purity hydrogen market in 2017 and is expected to witness a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for H2O2 from various applications such as water treatment, fuel cells, and organic synthesis. Furthermore, growing application scope of H2O in catalysis is also expected to drive the market over the forecast period.

Ultra-high purity hydrogen finds its major use in semiconductor fabrication owing to its superior characteristics as annealing gas which prevents crystallization within semiconductors during manufacturing process known as epitaxy at high temperatures (T). Epitaxy is a critical step during device fabrication which requires ultra-high purity hydrogen with very low levels of impurities for successful completion of production run.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing rapid industrialization, especially in China, India, South Korea and Japan. Growing demand for consumer electronics products such as smartphones and laptops has resulted in an increased production of semiconductors across these countries. This trend is projected to have a positive impact on industry growth over the next eight years.

North America accounted for a significant share of global ultra high purity hydrogen market owing to increasing demand from various end-use industries such as aerospace & defense, electronics & telecommunication equipment manufacturing, medical devices manufacturing etc., which are based in U.S., Canada and Mexico respectively (See Table 1). In addition, growing use of hydrogen gas as an alternative fuel by automotive manufacturers due to environmental benefits coupled with favorable government regulations is anticipated favorably impact industry growth over the coming years  (See Table 2).

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for hydrogen in various end-use industries such as chemicals, refining, and metals processing is expected to drive the growth of the ultra high purity hydrogen market over the forecast period.
  • Growing demand for fuel cells as a source of clean and efficient energy is also anticipated to boost the market growth.
  • Stringent environmental regulations pertaining to emissions are projected to propel the adoption of ultra high purity hydrogen across various industries.
  • Rising investments in research and development activities for developing new applications of hydrogen is expected to create lucrative opportunities for market players over the next few years. 5) Technological advancements in production processes are likely to provide impetus to market growth during the forecast period
