Market Overview:
The global uranyl carbonate market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for uranyl carbonate in various applications such as food industry, military, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and others. Additionally, the growing awareness about the benefits of uranyl carbonate is also propelling the growth of this market. However, stringent government regulations regarding its use may hamper the growth of this market in some regions during the forecast period. On basis of type, natural uranyl carbonate dominates the global market and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% during 2018-2030 due to its properties such as non-toxicity and eco-friendly nature.
Product Definition:
(UO2)4CO3. A solid mineral that is a source of uranium. Important in the production of nuclear weapons and power.
Natural:
Uranyl carbonate, also known as uranium tetrachloride, is a chemical compound of uranium and carbon. It has a strong odor similar to that of garlic or rotten eggs. It is usually found in mineral compounds such as uranite and ulexite. Uranium tetrachloride can be produced either from the ore or by direct chlorination of uraninite which consists of 4% U3O8 by weight mixture (U4O10).
Synthetic:
Synthetic is a man-made material, which is produced in laboratories. It has different forms such as polymers, resins and fibers. Uranyl carbonate (UC) used for the production of synthetic fiber or polymer and resin is manufactured by chemical synthesis from basic chemicals including carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide anhydride, ethylene oxide and ammonia. Synthetic materials are not natural; hence they have no biological affinity unlike organic products derived from plants & animals.
Application Insights:
The global demand for uranyl carbonate has witnessed a paradigm shift due to rising awareness among consumers regarding the benefits of minerals and vitamins. The food industry accounted for over 35% of the total market revenue in 2017.
Uranium (uranium, thorium) is an essential trace element required for plant growth. It is used in fertilizers as well as feed supplements to boost yield, improve quality and duration of crops grown on soil or hydroponics. The use of uranyl carbonate in agriculture increases crop yield by enhancing root development & activity, improving nutrient absorption & retention capacity, increasing resistance towards cold temperatures and disease resistance. Furthermore, it also helps prevent fungal infections caused by pathogens such as downy mildew and powdery mildew that often occur during winters when temperature drops below freezing point.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its position through the forecast period owing to high uranyl content in soil and water. China, India, Australia, and Pakistan are among the major producers of natural uranium ore. In addition, Australia has one of the largest reserves of thorium as well which is a byproduct of processing uraninite for nuclear fuel.
North America accounted for over 11% share in terms of revenue and volume consumed globally due to rising military expenditure coupled with growing demand from defense applications especially from U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for nuclear energy across the globe is expected to drive the growth of uranyl carbonate market over the forecast period.
- Growing use of uranium in various industrial applications is another key factor anticipated to fuel the demand for uranyl carbonate during the forecast period.
- Rising investment in nuclear power plants by developing countries is projected to propel the growth of uranyl carbonate market in near future.
- Stringent government regulations pertaining to use of uranium in various end-use industries is likely to create new opportunities for uranyl carbonate market players over next few years .
