Market Overview:
The global urea-SCR system market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for urea-SCR systems from various end-use industries, such as power plants, cement plants, steel plants, glass industry, chemical industry and transportation. In addition, stringent environmental regulations across the globe are also driving the demand for urea-SCR systems. The anhydrous ammonia segment is projected to lead the global urea-SCR system market during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. This can be attributed to its high efficiency and low emissions as compared with other types of ammonia solutions. The ammonium solution segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than that of anhydrous ammonia during the forecast period due its lower price point and easy availability across regions.
Product Definition:
Urea-SCR system is a technology to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. It injects urea solution into the exhaust gas stream, where it breaks down into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia then reacts with NOx to form nitrogen and water vapor.
Anhydrous Ammonia:
Anhydrous ammonia is a colorless and highly pungent gas with a suffocating odor. It is mainly manufactured by the thermal cracking of urea. Urea-SCR system uses anhydrous ammonia as one of its raw materials for producing nitrogenous fertilizers, which include ammonium nitrate, calcium ammonium nitrate, and others.
Ammonia Solution:
Ammonia solution is a colorless and highly pungent liquid used as a base in the manufacturing of urea-based solid calcium carbonate (U-SCR) systems. It is also used as an intermediate in other chemicals such as ammonium sulfate, alkyl halides, and polyamides. The solution has applications across various industries including agriculture, oil & gas processing, pharmaceuticals among others.
Application Insights:
The application segment includes power plant, cement plant, steel plant, glass industry, chemical industry and transportation. The power plants are expected to be the major consumers of urea-SCR systems over the forecast period owing to their requirement for large amount of hydrogen produced from fossil fuels.
Urea-SCR is used in ammonia plants for producing ammonium nitrate which is further utilized in various industries such as construction materials and fertilizers where it finds a wide application scope. High demand for these fertilizers from agricultural land has resulted in an increased production capacity globally which should ideally result in high product demand over the forecast period.
Ammonia solution is also used as a welding agent by many industrial processes including aluminum production where it acts as an effective substitute to conventional solutions such as calcium hypochlorite (CaClO). Ammonia solution consumption has witnessed significant growth due to its use across several applications including food processing and metal treatment industries worldwide.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to rising environmental regulations in countries, such as China and India, which are among the top 10 producers of urea across the globe. Increasing production capacities of ammonia and urea in these countries is anticipated to boost product demand over the coming years.
China was estimated as one of the largest markets for Urea-SCR systems with a share of 14% in 2017 on account of rapid industrialization coupled with increasing environmental regulations aimed at reducing pollution levels in major cities including Beijing and Shanghai.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for diesel vehicles in developing countries
- Stringent emission norms by regulatory authorities across the globe
- Rising awareness about the benefits of urea-SCR systems among fleet operators and owners
- Technological advancements that have made urea-SCR systems more efficient and reliable
- Growing demand for alternative fuel vehicles
