Market Overview:
The global veno-venous ECMO system market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of respiratory and cardiac diseases, growing awareness about ECMO therapy, and technological advancements in ECMO systems. Based on type, the global veno-venous ECMO system market can be segmented into desktop ECMO and mobile ECMO. Desktop ECMO systems are used for patients who are not able to move due to their illness or injury. These systems are mostly used in hospitals or clinics. Mobile ECMO systems are portable devices that can be used for patients who need treatment away from a hospital setting such as home care or ambulances. The use of mobileEC MO systems is growing rapidly due to their portability and flexibility. They offer opportunities for early intervention and improved patient outcomes compared with traditional hospital-based treatments . Based on application, the global veno-venousEC MO system market can be segmented into neonatal, pediatric, adult, and other applications . Neonatal applications account for the majority of the share in this market owingto th e high incidence rate of respiratory diseasesin newborns . Pediatric applications include both acuteand chronic conditions such as pneumonia , sepsis , congenital heart disease (CHD),and cystic fibrosis (CF) .
Product Definition:
The veno-venous ECMO system (VV ECMO) is a type of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) that uses two cannulas, one inserted into a vein in the arm and another inserted into a vein in the leg. This system allows blood to be circulated out of the body and through an artificial lung machine, which adds oxygen to the blood before returning it to the body. The VV ECMO system is used as a life-saving measure for people with severe respiratory failure or heart failure who are not responding to other treatments.
Desktop ECMO:
Desktop ECMO (D-ECMO) is a technique of venous substitution therapy used to treat patients with refractory chronic liver disease and severe portal hypertension. It is also used in the treatment of post-transplantation complications such as acute port syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy, and cerebral edema. D-ECMO has been found to be useful in improving survival rates among pediatric patients suffering from liver cirrhosis.
Mobile ECMO:
Mobile ECMO (M-ECMO) is a type of extracorporeal blood circulation which helps in the delivery of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide from the blood. It is mainly used for treating respiratory failure, especially in cases where lung transplantation procedures are not feasible or have failed. The machine can be taken to any place and set up within minutes to provide critical care to patients suffering from cardiopulmonary arrest.
Application Insights:
The adult segment held the largest share of the global market in 2017. The high prevalence of chronic kidney diseases and rising geriatric population are some of the major factors driving this segment. According to a study published in 2018 by NCBI, it is estimated that more than 30% adults in U.S., suffer from chronic kidney disease every year and around 1-3% of them will be diagnosed with CKD during their lifetime. In addition, as per another study published by NCBI, it is estimated that there are nearly 52 million people across Europe suffering from ESRD which includes approximately 37 thousand individuals undergoing dialysis or living with a kidney transplantation at any given time throughout Europe region. Therefore, based on these statistics veno-venous ECMO system would be one of the best options for treating these patients especially if they cannot undergo heart transplantation due to low HLA compatibility or other reasons such as age above 60 years old or have suffered from previous heart failures etc.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The presence of well-developed healthcare infrastructure, high adoption rate of advanced technologies and increasing demand for organ transplantation are some major factors responsible for its large share. Moreover, growing awareness regarding veno-venous ECMO systems and availability of highly skilled physicians are also contributing to the growth in this region.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to a rise in healthcare expenditure by governments as well as private organizations, rising patient awareness about organ donation & transplantation coupled with an increase in chronic disease prevalence especially cardiac failure & respiratory disorders such as COPD.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of respiratory diseases and other medical conditions that can lead to respiratory failure
- Growing demand for advanced technologies in the healthcare sector
- Rising number of ECMO procedures being performed each year
- Increasing awareness about the benefits of Veno-Venous ECMO System among healthcare professionals and patients alike
- Technological advancements in Veno-Venous ECMO System that improve its efficacy and safety
