A vessel degaussing system, also known as a degausser, is a device used to reduce or eliminate the magnetic field of an object. The purpose of a vessel degaussing system is to protect naval vessels from magnetic mines.


External Degaussing System:


External degaussing system is used to remove the magnetic effects from a vessel's surface. It uses an electrical current passed through the liquid to cancel out the magnetic field. The system works by creating a large electric arc in water near the ship’s hull, this electric arc acts as an anti-magnetic shield for cancelling out any magnetic fields that may be present on or near to the hull of a vessel.


Shipborne Degaussing System:


A shipborne degaussing system is a device used for the removal of magnetic fields from a vessel. It is mainly used to protect ships from Magnetic Anomalies (MA) and Magnetic Disturbances (MD). A MD can be described as an area of high magnetic field strength, which can occur anywhere but mostly near the surface of the water.


Application Insights:


The large vessels segment held the largest market share in 2017. The growth of this segment can be attributed to the rise in demand for de-magnetized ships, which are used for various applications including offshore oil exploration and marine maintenance. Vessels larger than 20,000 tons are usually equipped with degaussing systems as they carry more electrical equipment and generate more magnetic fields.
