Market Overview:
The global vitamin C market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing demand for vitamin C in food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, feed, and cosmetics applications. Food grade vitamin C held the largest share of the global market in 2017 owing to its widespread use as a food additive in various processed foods. Pharmaceutical grade vitaminC is projectedto be the fastest-growing segment during the forecast period due to its growing demand for use in nutraceuticals and dietary supplements.
Product Definition:
A water soluble vitamin that is necessary for the body to make collagen, a protein that is important for skin, bone, and cartilage health. Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron from food.
Food Grade Vitamin C:
Food grade vitamin C is a type of vitamin C that has been purified, extracted and standardized for food and beverage applications. It can be derived from two different sources; either by using ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) in the natural state or through the separation of scorbic acid (vitamin c), which is done to obtain purest form of ascorbic acid.
Pharmaceutical Grade Vitamin C:
Pharmaceutical grade vitamin C is a pure form of vitamin C used in pharmaceuticals. It has no food or dietary supplement uses and is only used for medical purposes. Pharmaceutical grade products are highly purified and have no additives or fillers. They are produced using two different technologies namely; High Purity (HP) Technology and Ultra-High Purity (UH) Technology, which differentiate them from the food-grade product forms available in the market today.
Application Insights:
The food & beverage application segment led the global market in 2017 and is projected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The product is widely used as a preservative, antioxidant, and flavoring agent in various food products such as juices, soft drinks, dairy products, bakery & confectionery items. Furthermore, it plays an important role in maintaining human health by providing essential nutrients such as vitamin C that helps strengthen immunity against diseases.
Vitamin C has been proven to be beneficial for bone health owing to its ability to reduce calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract when consumed with meals high in phosphorus or oxalate content which reduces urinary calcium excretion thus improving bone mineralization process.
Regional Analysis:
North America was the largest market for global vitamin C in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period owing to high consumer awareness regarding health and well-being, coupled with a strong preference for nutritional products. Furthermore, increasing demand for dietary supplements and functional foods & beverages is also likely to drive growth in this region.
Asia Pacific emerged as the fastest-growing regional market over the past few years on account of rising disposable income levels and changing food habits among consumers from major economies, such as China and India. Growing population along with increased consumption of vitamin C-based food products has led to an increase in product demand across these countries; however, limited penetration of pharmaceutical grade products due to lack of awareness about their benefits may hinder growth during the forecast period. Moreover, growing healthcare expenditure by governments along with rising investments by multinational companies will further fuel industry expansion over next eight years (2018 - 2030).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for Vitamin C from dietary supplements and functional foods industries.
- Rising awareness about the health benefits of Vitamin C among consumers.
- Growing demand for natural and organic products containing Vitamin C.
- Increasing use of Vitamin C in personal care products such as skin care and hair care products.
