A voltmeter is an instrument used to measure the potential difference (voltage) between two points in an electrical circuit. The importance of voltmeters lies in their ability to help troubleshoot electrical problems by allowing you to see whether or not there is sufficient voltage present at different points in the circuit.
DC Voltage:
DC voltage is the electrical energy in the range of 0 to 1.0 V. It is also known as Digital Multiply Voltage (DMV). DC voltage has no physical presence; it exists only in electronic devices and various instruments that work on these voltages, such as Voltmeter or multimeter which measures current and voltage, or any battery which stores electrical energy.
AC Voltage:
AC voltage is the alternative term for electric current and it's used to measure the rate of flow of electrical charge. The longer charges travel in one direction, the higher is AC voltage. Voltmeter measures AC voltage and converts it into mechanical energy by using a rotary dial or digital display with respect to the resistance offered by a coil at its terminals.
The unit of measurement for voltmeter is called a volt.
Application Insights:
