Market Overview:
The global water trading market is expected to grow from USD XX million in 2018 to USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of X.X%. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for water due to population growth and industrialization, and the need for efficient water management. The global water trading market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is divided into long-term leases, short-term leases, permanent transfers, and callable transfers. On the basis of application, it is classified into agricultural use; industrial use; residential use; commercial & institutional use; mining & energy production use; and others (including fisheries).
Product Definition:
Water trading is the buying and selling of water rights, such as permits to divert water from a river or groundwater rights. The purpose of water trading is to allow more efficient use of the available water supply by allowing those who can make better use of it to buy or sell rights from those who cannot.
Long-Term Leases:
Long-term lease is a type of contract in which the lessor purchases the right to use and occupy real estate or an interest in a business facility, for a fixed term. The lessee must comply with all terms and conditions stated by the lessor at the time of leasing.
Short-Term Leases:
Short-term lease is a type of real estate contract in which the lessor (lessee) transfers ownership of an asset to the lessee for a specified period, and both parties benefit from the use and possession of that object. The lessee obtains exclusive use and possession of an article, while the lessor gains rent or other consideration during the term.
Application Insights:
The permanent transfers segment dominated the global water trading market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. This can be attributed to growing urbanization, which has resulted in increasing demand for fresh water across various applications such as residential, agricultural and industrial.
In terms of value as well as volume, agricultural emerged as the largest application segment on account of high irrigation needs across various crops such a sugarcane and corn. Moreover, increasing population coupled with rapid urbanization has led to increased demand for food resources which is likely to propel demand over the forecast period. Residential also accounted for a significant share owing to rising construction activities resulting in increased need for fresh water supply & drainage systems leading to an increase in residential applications globally.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global water trading market in 2017. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period as well, owing to factors such as increasing population and growing demand for food and energy. Moreover, countries such as China are expanding their agricultural land by about 20 million hectares every year due to rising domestic demand for food security. Increasing industrialization has led to an increase in wastewater generation across various industries, which is further augmenting the need for water management services globally.
The Middle East & Africa region is anticipated to grow at a significant rate over the forecast period owing to increasing investments in desalination plants across several countries including UAE (desalination plant), Saudi Arabia (reverse osmosis membrane process) and Israel (ROmembrane Process).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing population and consequent increase in demand for potable water
- Rapid industrialization and urbanization, which leads to increased demand for water resources
- Unsustainable use of groundwater resources due to overexploitation, leading to scarcity of water in certain areas
- Climate change resulting in changes in precipitation patterns and extreme weather events that can disrupt the supply of water resources
- Emergence of new technologies such as desalination that can help address the challenge posed by scarcity
