Sulfur content 3-6 is a form of high sulfur petroleum coke (HSPC) and is the most dominant form in global HSPC market. Sulfur content 3-6 has higher carbon number and more iron than other forms of HSPC. It also has a higher calorific value (9,049 J/kg) which makes it suitable for use as an energy source in place of conventional fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas.

The sulfur content of the fuel oil is measured in units called Sulfur-Dioxide-Year (SDY) and it represents the Sulphur content of fuels which has been processed through refineries. The measurement is done by a method known as oxidation, wherein hydrogen and oxygen are used to break down the fuel oil into its components.
