Market Overview:
The global industrial relay market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for industrial automation, growing demand for relays in military and electronics applications, and rising demand for relays in other applications. The electromechanical relay segment is expected to dominate the global industrial relay market during the forecast period. This segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030 due to its high reliability and low cost.
Product Definition:
A relay is an electrically operated switch. Relays are used where it is necessary to control a large amount of current with a small amount of current. For example, relays are used to turn lights on and off, start motors, and open and close gates.
Electromechanical:
Electromechanical is a technology that uses electrical energy for mechanical work. It can be used to create motion in machines and devices without using any fuel or source of energy other than the electric current itself. Electromechanical systems are classified into two types on the basis of their functional entities, viz., electrical machines and mechanical devices. Electrical machine includes servo motors, solenoids, relays, DC motors & AC motors while mechanical device comprises actuators & sensors among others.
Latching:
Latching is a technique used in industrial relay systems to avoid the flow of current through an open circuit. It helps in maintaining the closed state of circuits even after the power source is removed from some parts of the system. The process involves two devices, called as latches, which are connected across a circuit and when both are pressed simultaneously then current cannot flow through open circuits; instead it will go through closed circuits thus making sure that all parts of system stay powered up.
Application Insights:
The industrial automation segment dominated the global relay market in 2017, accounting for over 40% of the overall revenue. The segment is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand from manufacturing sectors, including automotive and electronics. Automation has enabled humans to work more efficiently and productively by reducing errors and providing consistency in production processes. This technology is widely used across various industries such as food & beverage, chemical, paper & pulp among others.
Solid-state relays offer several advantages including higher switching speed (10s of Megahertz), greater energy efficiency (over 50% less power consumption), better isolation against voltage fluctuations and improved durability due to integrated circuit chips that control operating functions without relying on mechanical parts or external components. These are increasingly being adopted by military applications owing to their superior performance characteristics when compared with electromechanical relays commonly used in other applications such as industrial automation or household appliances among others).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing strong economic growth on account of rapid industrialization and increasing foreign investments. China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong are some of the prominent markets that have been experiencing strong economic growth for years together.
The Asia Pacific region is also home to several emerging economies including India and Indonesia that are poised to experience strong economic growth in near future as a result of various government initiatives such as “Make in Indiaâ€and “KiwiSaver†among others being implemented by Indian governments across various states/union territories such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana State etc., along with other socio-economic factors aiding industrial development across these regions.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the automotive industry for advanced safety features in vehicles
- Growing demand for industrial relays from the renewable energy sector to meet the rising need for power generation
- Rising demand from developing countries due to increasing industrialization and urbanization
- Proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) and growing adoption of smart technologies across industries
- Growing popularity of relay-based solutions among Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)
