NIR (Near-Infrared) spectroscopy is the study of interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiations in the near-infrared region of the spectrum. The technique is used for analysis, detection, and measurement of chemical compounds. It provides valuable information about molecular structure when applied to small molecules as well as large complex carbohydrates such as starch and cellulose.
Mid IR:
The Mid-Infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy is a technique that involves the study of molecular and atomic vibrations in the near infrared region. The method provides information on bond lengths, bond angles, and chemical environments along with other properties. It also helps to determine functional groups present etc. mid-IR spectroscopy is used for applications such as studying biological tissues, determining composition of gases etc., which are beyond the range of normal IR light or visible spectrum.
Application Insights:
The biological segment dominated the global market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The application of NIR and mid-infrared spectroscopy for studying living organisms is well established, however, its use for analyzing samples that are more than 3 months old is not very common.
