Iridium is a chemical element with symbol Ir and atomic number 77. It is a silvery-white, corrosion-resistant metal in the platinum group. Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant metal known, even at temperatures as high as 2000 °C (3632 °F). It has an extremely low reactivity with other elements, and it does not form oxides under standard conditions.
The most important use of iridium is as a component of alloys used to make crucibles for handling molten materials such as glass and ceramics. The second most important use of iridium is in electrical contacts because it has very low contact resistance.
