Global Iron and Steel Slag Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Iron and steel slag is a by-product of the iron and steel manufacturing process. It is produced when molten metal comes into contact with water or air. The slag cools quickly into a hard, glassy material that can be used in construction or land reclamation projects.

Blast Furnace Slag:

Blast furnace slag is a waste product generated during the production of steel. It is usually formed in the shape of particles and can be categorized into two types, namely ferroalloyous and non-ferroalloyous. The major constituents of blast furnace slag include silicon, carbon, calcium, aluminum oxide along with some water and other impurities.

Steelmaking Slag:

Steelmaking slag is a waste product obtained during the production of steel. It is usually a mixture of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, such as iron, zinc, aluminum along with other impurities. The presence of these metals in the form of slag has been known to be beneficial for plants as it provides better nutrient uptake and distribution within the plant thereby increasing overall crop yield.

Application Insights:

Building and construction was the largest application segment in 2016, accounting for a volume share of over 50%. The product is widely used as an additive in concrete to improve its mechanical properties. It is also used as a filler material in the form of small pieces or large blocks in roadways, pavements and parking lots. In addition, it can be utilized directly into the soil to provide stability and support to plants growing near these roadsides.

The railways application segment accounted for nearly 9% market share by volume in 2016 on account of high demand from China which has emerged as one of the leading consumers globally owing to rapid industrialization coupled with increasing railway infrastructure development projects across various regions including Europe and North America.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global iron and steel slag market in 2016, accounting for a share of over 68.0% owing to the high production volume and growing demand from China, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The region is also expected to witness significant growth due to increasing investments in infrastructure development coupled with rising government spending on defense sector which is likely to drive demand for steel products including rails as well as building & construction materials such as cement over the forecast period.

Europe was estimated at USD X million in 2016 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2017 to 2030 owing herring being one of the major species that are important for marine ecosystem health along with other species like seals, whales etc., which have led researchers concerned about its decline caused by environmental pollution caused by heavy metal contamination resulting into declining fish population thus leading industry participants involved in seafood processing industries such as Norway’s salmon industry or Scottish fishing fleet etc.

Growth Factors:

  • Growing demand from construction and infrastructure sectors
  • Increasing use of slag in manufacturing cement and other building materials
  • Rising awareness about the benefits of using slag as a replacement for traditional materials
  • Technological advancements that have made slag more efficient to use
  • Government initiatives to promote the use of recycled materials
