Market Overview:
The global LNG bunkering market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for LNG as a marine fuel due to its environmental benefits over traditional fuels such as diesel and heavy fuel oil. In addition, the stringent emissions regulations being implemented by various countries are also driving the demand for LNG bunkering. The truck-to-ship segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global LNG bunkering market in 2018, followed by ship-to-ship and port-to-ship segments. The container vessels segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global LNG bunkering market in terms of application in 2018, followed by tanker vessels and bulk & general cargo vessels segments.
Product Definition:
LNG bunkering is the process of transferring liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a storage tank to a ship. LNG bunkering is important because it allows ships to run on cleaner fuel, which reduces emissions and helps protect the environment.
Truck-to-Ship:
Truck-to-ship (TTS) is a process of converting a shipping container or trailer into an energy storage unit. It's done by adding an on-board generator and electric vehicle charging system to provide grid support for when the container is not in use. The electricity generated can either be used to charge the electric vehicle or it can be supplied to the local power grid.
Ship-to-Ship:
The ship-to-ship (STS) is a transaction between two vessels, where one party delivers goods to the other party. The transaction can be done either at the port or in open sea. In LNG bunkering, ships are used to deliver LNG from a vessel that possesses it into another one located in a different geographical location.
It is an effective way of delivering gas to another vessel without having any intermediate distribution system in between the supplier and destination vessel.
Application Insights:
Container vessels were the largest application segment and accounted for over 60.0% of the global market in 2017. Container ships are designed to transport LNG in large volumes, thereby reducing its cost per unit volume as compared to that of liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The growing demand for intermodal containers is expected to drive growth over the forecast period.
Tanker vessels are projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing trade activities across various regions coupled with growing investments by foreign oil companies in China, India, South Korea and Japan as these countries have one of the largest potential markets for such investments due largely their rapid economic development along with increasing consumption requirements resulting from rising population.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to emerge as the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for LNG from developing economies, such as China and India. Asia Pacific was followed by Europe in terms of growth rate owing to stringent environmental regulations regarding greenhouse gas emissions coupled with growing demand for cleaner fuel alternatives such as natural gas. North America emerged as a prominent region in 2016 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period owing to rising shale gas production that has resulted into lowering prices of LNG across global markets thereby attracting more players toward this region.
Latin America also presents significant opportunities due its geographical proximity towards major consuming countries, such as U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for LNG as a marine fuel due to its environmental benefits over traditional fuels such as heavy fuel oil and diesel.
- Stringent emissions regulations being introduced by various governments around the world, which is incentivising the use of LNG as a marine fuel.
- The development of new LNG bunkering infrastructure in key ports and maritime hubs around the world.
- The increasing popularity of LNG-powered vessels, particularly in the cruise ship and container shipping sectors.
- .The growth in global trade and seaborne traffic, which is driving demand for more efficient and environmentally-friendly maritime transportation solutions
