Market Overview:
The global mandibular distraction device market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJDs), rising awareness about dental health, and technological advancements in the field of dentistry. The global mandibular distraction device market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, it is divided into multi-vector distraction and bi-directional distraction devices. Multi-vector distraction devices are further classified into unilateral distractors and bilateral distractors. Bilateral distractors are further sub-segmented into two types: monolithic bilateral distractors and modular bilateral distractors. Bi-directional distractions are those that move bone fragments in two directions simultaneously – anterior/posterior or superior/inferior – while mono-directional distractions move bone fragments only in one direction at a time (anterior or posterior). On the basis of application, it is segmented into adult and pediatric applications. Adult applications include treatment for edentulousness (tooth loss), implant placement surgery, ridge augmentation procedures etc., while pediatric applications include treatment for congenital deformities such as hemifacial microsomia (small face) etc., cleft lip & palate surgeries etc.
Product Definition:
A mandibular distraction device is a medical device used to correct jaw deformities in children. The device is inserted into the child's mouth and gradually pulls the lower jaw forward, correcting the alignment of the teeth.
Muti-vector Distraction:
Multi-vector distraction is a dental procedure that uses more than one vector at a time to create three dimensions of force. The vectors used are usually electric, magnetic and ultrasound. This technique helps in treating complicated cases where other techniques failed or the patient was unresponsive. It also helps in increasing blood flow and tissue oxygenation which increases healing rate by reducing an inflammatory response along with reduced pain during treatment.
Bi-directional Distraction:
Bi-directional distraction is a dental procedure in which the dentist uses two drills, one to remove tissue and the other to create space for implants. Bi-directional distraction is used as an alternative method of mandibular distraction. It helps save time and reduces complications during surgery by eliminating problems such as dislocations, fractures, avulsed roots & crowns and allows quick healing of wounds resulting in reduced hospital stay.
Application Insights:
The adult application segment held the largest share of over 70.0% in 2017. Growing awareness about dental problems and their impact on the quality of life is expected to be a key factor driving the demand for MDD devices in this segment. According to a study published by NCBI, around 54% of adults suffer from some form of tooth decay or gum disease while 47% have some form of cavities or gaps in their teeth. The same study also states that around 26-28 million fillings are done every year across the globe, which accounts for around 17-18%of all dental procedures performed annually worldwide. This significant rise in dentistry related issues is expected to boost market growth over the forecast period as mandibular distraction devices are used widely among orthodontic patients as an efficient solution due to its ability to realign and strengthen teeth without causing any pain during chewing or smiling activities.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to the presence of well-established healthcare facilities, high adoption rate of advanced technologies, and supportive reimbursement policies. Moreover, increasing incidence of dental disorders is expected to drive regional growth over the forecast period. According to a study published by Journal Of American Dental Association (JADA), prevalence of untreated tooth decay among adults was found to be 59%. The U.S., being one of the most developed countries with high per capita income and access to sophisticated healthcare facilities has one of the highest incidences globally for mandibular distraction devices usage across all regions considered in this study.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD)
- Growing demand for minimally invasive surgical procedures
- Rising awareness about the benefits of mandibular distraction devices
- Technological advancements in mandibular distraction devices industry
- Growing number of research and development activities in the field of mandibular distraction devices
