Product Definition:
A microbial culture is a population of cells from a single species or genus of microorganisms. The term is often used interchangeably with the term "microbial community." A microbial culture is usually grown in a laboratory setting and used to determine the presence or absence of certain microbes, to identify their genetic makeup, or to study their physiology. Microbial cultures are also used in biotechnology and medicine for the production of antibiotics, vaccines, and other therapeutics.
Starter Cultures:
Starter cultures are used for microbial culture growth. They are also known as seed or inoculum cultures. The most commonly used starter culture is a glucose/maltose-based slant, which provides an optimum growth environment for heterologous microbes. Other types of starter cultures include peptone water, dextrose and maltose, glycerol (glycerol monostearate), trehalose, arabinoxylans and gelatin hydrolysates (gelatin).
Adjunct & Aroma Cultures:
Adjunct & Aroma Cultures are used in microbial cultures for the production of antibiotics, enzymes, and vitamins. It is also used as a source of carbon and nitrogen for the growth of microbes. These products are available in different forms such as liquids (broth or stock), powders, frozen formulations, and dried formulations.
The global market size was valued at USD 1.5 billion in 2015.
Application Insights:
The beverages application segment led the global market in 2017. This is attributed to the rising demand for functional beverages, which are manufactured by growing bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, on fruit pulp or sugarcane juice concentrate. The use of these cultures helps in improving gut health and reducing gas formation while fermentation occurs.
The dairy products segment is expected to register a significant CAGR over the forecast period owing to an increase in consumption of fermented milk products like yogurt and buttermilk among other dairy products that contain bacterial culture supplements. These microbes perform specific functions during fermentation; for instance, Lactococcus lactis breaks down lactose (a disaccharide) into smaller compounds so that they can be absorbed by the body easier. The aforementioned factors are anticipated to boost product demand over the coming years.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The growth is attributed to the increasing consumption of probiotic-based foods and beverages, coupled with rising awareness about their health benefits. Europe accounted for a significant share owing to high demand for dairy products, which are supplemented by microbial cultures. Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period due to factors such as improving healthcare infrastructure and growing population especially in China and India.
Microbial cultures have been used traditionally across Asia Pacific countries such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia among others for various food processing applications resulting into improved quality attributes including flavor retention and stability of nutrients including vitamins., minerals etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for probiotics and prebiotics in food and dietary supplements
- Rising awareness about the benefits of microbial cultures for human health
- Growing demand from the pharmaceuticals industry for microbial cultures used in drug development and manufacturing processes
- Increasing research funding to support development of new applications for microbial cultures
- Technological advances that improve the efficiency and yield of microbial culture production
