Ammonium nitrate is a salt formed by combining ammonia and nitric acid. It has a triple bond between the nitrogen and carbon which makes it an extremely reactive material. This reactivity property leads to its application in manufacturing explosives for mining, quarrying, civil works, etc.


Ammonium nitrate (AN) powder is used as an oxidizing agent in the processing of ores containing metals such as gold and silver.


ANFO:


ANFO or Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil is a type of industrial explosives used in mining and construction industries. It is a solid, colorless, and water-soluble compound with an odor similar to gasoline. ANFO consists of fuel (ammonia) mixed with oxidizer (nitric acid). The mixture can be formed into pellets or cakes depending on the end use. Pellets are usually preferred over cakes owing to their ease in handling by the miners during mining activities.
