Market Overview:
The global motor soft starter market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for energy-efficient solutions across various industries, and the growing awareness about motor soft starters among end users. Based on type, the global motor soft starter market is segmented into low voltage motor soft starters and medium to high voltage motor soft starters. Low voltage motors are used in applications with voltages up to 600 V, while medium to high voltage motors are used in applications with voltages above 600 V. The low voltage segment is expected to grow at a higher CAGR than the medium to high voltage segment during the forecast period from 2018to 2030.
Product Definition:
A motor soft starter is a device used to reduce the starting current of an electric Motor. It does this by using power electronic devices that create a rotating field in the stator of the motor. This rotating field reduces the starting torque required to get the rotor up to speed.
Low Voltage Motor Soft Starter:
Low voltage motor soft starter is a device used to convert the Alternating Current (AC) into Direct Current (DC). These are mainly used in applications where the starting current is less than or equal to 200mA and there is no need for a high voltage. Low Voltage Motor Soft Starters are available in two types, namely AC type and DC type.
Medium to High Voltage Motor Soft Starter:
Medium to high voltage motor soft starter is a device used in medium to high voltage (MV) electric motors which are not capable of providing the required starting torque. The MVESSS is an electronic device that uses pulse width modulation technique for producing low speed and high current waveforms for efficiently rotating the engine.
The key features of MVESSS include compact size, low cost, easy installation and maintenance, wide range input power supply (AC-DC), overload protection etc.
Application Insights:
The power generation segment dominated the global motor soft starter market in 2017, accounting for a share of over 40.0% by revenue. The growth can be attributed to the growing demand for electricity from various industrial applications and residential end-use sectors across countries such as China, India and Japan. Furthermore, soft starters are used in large numbers across power generation plants owing to their ability to reduce rotating machine start-ups which result in high maintenance costs along with reducing environmental pollution caused due to excess emissions.
In addition, soft starters have an advantage over conventional hard starting equipment since they eliminate the risk of damage or injury during starts when compared with other types of electric motors due to improved insulation properties between stator and rotor windings that prevent high voltage pulses from jumping directly from the primary winding into human skin or eyes (a phenomenon known as dielectric breakdown).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing strong economic growth on account of rapid industrialization and flourishing automotive industry. China, India, Japan, South Korea are some of the prominent countries that have been contributing significantly to regional growth.
The Middle East & Africa is also anticipated to witness significant growth over a nine-year period from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing demand for power generation across various industries including oil & gas, water & wastewater treatment and mining among others. In addition, rising government initiatives towards energy conservation are likely boost soft starters demand in this region as well.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for electric vehicles
- Growing investments in renewable energy sources
- Rising concerns over energy security and climate change
- Proliferation of smart grids and the internet of things (IoT)
- Technological advancements in motor soft starters
