Product Definition:
A sodium-sulfur battery is a type of rechargeable battery which uses molten sulfur and solid sodium to store energy. Sodium-sulfur batteries have a high energy density, making them well suited for use in electric vehicles and large scale grid storage applications.
Molten-Salt Type:
Molten salt type is a battery technology that utilizes molten salts as the electrolyte. The major advantage of using this electrolyte over conventional ones is that the former can be recycled, which makes it extremely cost-effective and environment-friendly.

Others:
Others is the second largest chemical used in the battery. It helps to balance and regulate the charge of a battery. The Others segment includes lead, lithium, sodium and calcium among others. Calcium is mainly used as an additive for enhancing capacity retention and improving cycle life in batteries whereas lithium is mostly used as an alloying agent with electrodes of different metals such as nickel & aluminum or copper & zinc to make them conductive so that they can hold a charge better.
Application Insights:
The grid and standalone systems application segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 50% in 2017. Standalone system means a system without any other source of power; it is used for lighting, communication etc. In terms of capacity, grid systems account for majority of the total installed capacity as they are more reliable than standalone systems do.
In terms of energy storage alone or along with another source such as solar or wind energy storage sources, molten-salt battery technology has several advantages including longer life span (10 years), higher efficiency (85% compared to regular lead acid batteries) and better performance at lower costs per kwhr stored (compared to regular lead acid).
