Nitrogen is a chemical element that is found in the air and makes up 78% of the Earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen gas is used in many industries such as food and beverage, electronics, general industrial, and chemical & petrochemical. Nitrogen gas can be generated by three different types of nitrogen generators: PSA nitrogen generators, membrane nitrogen generators, or cryogenic air separation plants. The first step before the PSA process is compressed air passing through a combination of filters and an activated carbon tower with the purpose of removing dust, entrained oil and water. The purified air is then directed to one of two adsorption vessels that are packed with carbon molecular sieves (CMS). The remaining impurities such as carbon dioxide and residual moisture are adsorbed by the CMS at the entrance of the adsorbent bed. Gas flow is supplied under pressure into a bundle of membrane fibres. Due to the difference in partial pressures on the external and internal membrane surface, oxygen selectively permeates through the membrane allowing nitrogen to pass through at least 99% pure at desired purity level while oxygen which concentrates on external surface vented to atmosphere by portion produced nitrogen.
- Nitrogen is a key component in the production of ammonia, which is used to make fertilizers and explosives.
- The demand for nitrogen-based fertilizers has increased due to the growing population and increasing agricultural output.
- The use of nitrogen-based fertilizers has increased due to the development of new technologies that allow for more efficient fertilizer production and distribution, such as ammonia synthesis plants that produce urea from natural gas or coal gasification plants that produce ammonia from coal gasification processes.
- Nitrogen generation is also used in other industries such as oil refining, steelmaking, and chemical manufacturing where it is used as a reducing agent or an oxidizing agent respectively; this creates additional demand for nitrogen generation facilities in these industries as well.
- The cost of generating nitrogen can be reduced by using waste gases from other industrial processes such as steelmaking or oil refining; this creates additional demand for these gases which are then converted into nitric acid before being sold on to fertilizer manufacturers.
