Market Overview:
The global nitrogen trifluoride & fluorine gas market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for semiconductor chips, flat panel displays, solar cells, and uranium enrichment. Additionally, the growing use of nitrogen trifluoride & fluorine gas in electronic cleaning applications is also contributing to the growth of this market. However, volatility in prices of raw materials used in manufacturing these gases may restrain the growth of this market to some extent during the forecast period. On the basis of type, NF3 accounted for a larger share than F2 in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period as well. This can be attributed to its superior properties such as high thermal stability and low reactivity when compared with F2 gas. On account of these properties, NF3 finds extensive use across various application segments such as semiconductor chips fabrication, flat panel display production etc., thereby resulting in higher demand for it globally. Based on application type, semiconductor chips held a dominant share among all applications considered within this study owing mainlyto their widespread use across various electronics devices such as smartphones.
Product Definition:
Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) is a colorless, odorless gas used in the manufacture of semiconductors and other electronic devices. Fluorine gas (F2) is a highly reactive, pale yellow gas that occurs naturally as a component of the atmosphere. Nitrogen trifluoride and fluorine gases are important because they are among the most efficient greenhouse gases in terms of their ability to trap heat from the sun.
NF3:
NF3 is a by-product of the nuclear industry and is also known as uranium hexafluoride. It has been used in gas centrifuges to separate uranium from radioactive materials and was later on used for fluorine production. Fluorine being an important raw material for chemical & pharmaceutical industries, its demand has seen a rise over the past few years which led to high growth in NF3 market.
F2:
F2 is also known as the second gas, it is a colorless and highly reactive chemical. It can be produced in several ways but most commonly by the reaction of hydrofluoric acid with calcium fluoride or sodium fluide. F2 has a strong smell similar to that of bleach and should be handled with care due to its reactive nature.
Application Insights:
The application segment includes semiconductor chips, flat panel display, solar cells, uranium enrichment, electronic cleaning gas cleaners and others. The demand for nitrogen trifluoride & fluorine gas in the semiconductor industry is expected to witness growth at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 on account of its usage in high-density plasma processing as well as low-temperature thermal processing for enhancing the performance of integrated circuits.
Nitrogen trifluoride has been used extensively during the production process of Flat Panel Display (FPD) technology owing to its ability to enhance criticality and hardness properties required for manufacturing efficient displays with low power consumption characteristics.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in terms of NF3 and accounted for a volume share of over 60% in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth on account of increasing demand from various end-use industries including semiconductors, electronics, solar energy, and others. China has emerged as the major consumer owing to its large population coupled with rapid industrialization.
North America is projected to be one of the fastest-growing regions over the forecast period owing to growing environmental concerns regarding global warming due to increased carbon dioxide emissions resulting from using nitrogen trifluoride gas as a raw material for producing fluorine gas across this region. Moreover, rising awareness about energy conservation will also drive industry growth over this region during the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for semiconductor devices and solar cells
- Growing application in LCDs and LEDs
- Rising use in optical fibers and telecommunications industry
- Proliferation of flat panel displays (FPDs)
- Increasing demand from the electronics sector
