Market Overview:

The global nuclear medicine market is expected to reach USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period 2018-2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to factors such as rising incidence of cancer, technological advancements in nuclear medicine and increasing demand for SPECT and PET scans. However, the high cost of equipment and stringent regulatory norms are restraining the growth of this market. Based on type, the global nuclear medicine market is segmented into Tc-99m, I-123/131m, In-111m, Xe-133m,, Th-201m,, Ga-67 citrate and other isotopes. Tc99 dominates the global nuclear medicine market owing to its widespread use in cardiac stress tests and bone scans. Iodine (I123/131) is also used extensively for thyroid imaging and other diagnostic applications. In terms of application, the global nuclear medicine market is divided into diagnostic applications and therapeutic applications. The diagnostic segment dominates this market due to rising demand for SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography)and PET (positron emission tomography) scans across all regions studied in this research study .

Global Nuclear Medicine Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Nuclear Medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and treat disease. It is used to diagnose and treat problems such as cancer, heart disease, and thyroid problems.

Tc-99:

Tc-99 is a radioactive tracer used in medical imaging. It is mainly employed to locate and track the flow of blood within the human body. However, it can also be used for other applications such as localization of tumors or inflammation. Tc-99m is an artificial radiotracer that closely resembles tetrachloroethylene (TCE) 99; hence it was named after its chemical structure.

I-123/131:

I-123/131 is a radioisotope used in nuclear medicine for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. It is an organic compound which consists of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen & oxygen and has a molecular weight of 131.8 (C+N+O) & 123.0 (HCO3). I-123/131 was first produced by Fermi National Laboratory in America as an alternative to I-90 for medical use back in 1980s.

Application Insights:

The diagnostic application segment dominated the global nuclear medicine market in 2017. The growth of this segment can be attributed to the growing adoption of these techniques for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. For instance, In-111 is widely used for imaging purposes in oncology as it provides high bone/tissue contrast and short half-life which makes it suitable for PET/CT imaging.

Tc-99m sulfur colloid is most commonly used for cardiology applications due to its ability to detect even very small amounts of tissue damage caused by myocardial infarction or angina pectoris without causing any harm to heart muscles. However, Tc-99m suffers from disadvantages such as low availability (stockage) and short half life which restrict its use in cardiology applications compared with that required in oncology or neurology applications.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global nuclear medicine market in 2016 with a revenue share of over 35%. The growth can be attributed to the presence of major players, high investment in R&D, and favorable reimbursement scenario. In addition, increasing applications for nuclear scans is further expected to drive regional growth. For instance, according to American Cancer Society (ACS), Inc., around 1.6 million new cases were estimated to be diagnosed by 2020 in U.S.

Asia Pacific is anticipated witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing its large patient pool and improving healthcare infrastructure coupled with economic development & growing medical tourism industry especially after China’s 13th Five Year Plan was implemented in 2011 aimed at achieving sustainable economic development through innovation-driven transformation (IDT).

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing incidence of cancer and other diseases that can be treated with nuclear medicine
  • Growing demand for PET scans to diagnose and stage cancer
  • Advances in nuclear medicine technology that make it easier to use and more accurate
  • Increased focus on cost-effective healthcare delivery
  • Rising awareness of the benefits of nuclear medicine
