Market Overview:

The global offshore cable market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, and the rising demand for oil and gas. The global offshore cable market can be segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market can be divided into inter-array cables and export cables. Inter-array cables are used to connect different arrays of wind turbines within a wind farm while export cables are used to transmit electricity from an offshore wind farm to onshore substations or vice versa. On the basis of application, the market can be classified into oil and gas drilling, offshore wind turbine installation/maintenance/repairing activities (O&M), subsea communications infrastructure installation & maintenance (SCIM), submarine power transmission lines (PPLs), floating production storage & offloading facilities (FPSOs) etc., Others includes dredging works carried out in marine areas etc.

Global Offshore Cable Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

An offshore cable is a submarine telecommunications cable laid between two or more points offshore, usually in international waters. Offshore cables carry telephone, broadband, and other digital communications traffic.

Inter-array Cable:

Inter-array cable is a type of sea cable, which consists of several hundred wires that are laid between two ships or offshore platforms. The purpose of this cable is to transfer the electrical power from one side to another without any loss. It has various applications in oil & gas industry and for laying undersea pipelines.

Export Cable:

An export cable is a communication channel between an offshore wind farm and the power grid. It consists of a pair of conductors that are enclosed in PVC or polyvinyl chloride sheath, which is floating on the surface of the water. The cable has two ends; one end is connected to an underwater electrical substation and other end is connected to land-based electrical substation through an underwater repeater.

Application Insights:

The offshore wind turbine application segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 30% in 2017. The growing need to interconnect countries with different energy resources, increasing focus on renewable energy generation, and favorable government policies are some of the key factors driving this market.

Offshore cables are used in numerous applications across various industries including oil and gas drilling, power generation & transmission, healthcare information technology infrastructure etc. The other application segment includes applications such as data communication between ships at sea or land-based mobile stations connected to a submarine cable system that uses optical fiber cables for signal transfer over long distances underwater.

Increasing demand from data centers operating globally is expected to drive the demand for offshore grid connections along with an increase in cloud computing activities thereby propelling growth during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific offshore cable market is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030. The growth can be attributed to increasing investments in the oil and gas sector, particularly in China and India. For instance, in December 2017, China Energy Group (CNG) signed a contract with Russia’s state-owned Gazprom for the construction of two natural gas pipelines across the Russian Arctic region. The pipeline will have an estimated capacity of 865 kilotons per day and would run parallel to existing pipelines between Vyborg port city on White Sea and Ust-Luga port city on Baltic Sea coast.

The project is expected to be completed by 2019  and its supply would depend upon availability of resources as well as ice free conditions in Russian rivers during transportation season from late May till late August every year.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for data and communication: The increasing demand for data and communication is one of the primary growth drivers for the offshore cable market. This can be attributed to the growing number of internet users, rising number of mobile subscribers, and surging demand for bandwidth-intensive applications such as video streaming, online gaming, and cloud services.
  • Proliferation of 4G/LTE networks: The proliferation of 4G/LTE networks is another key factor that is expected to fuel the growth of the offshore cable market in coming years. LTE offers faster data speeds than 3G technologies, which is resulting in an increase in demand for high-speed broadband connectivity across different regions worldwide.
  • Favorable regulatory environment: A favorable regulatory environment is also aiding the growth prospects of the offshore cable market. For instance, several countries are investing heavily in submarine cables as part of their national broadband plans to provide high-speed internet access to all citizens at affordable rates. This is encouraging telecom service providers to adopt new submarine cables systems instead if relying on older ones or satellite connections alone..
