Market Overview:
The global oilfield demulsifiers market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for oil and gas across the globe. In addition, the shale gas industry is growing rapidly, which is expected to drive the demand for oilfield demulsifiers in the coming years. The global oilfield demulsifiers market can be segmented by type, application, and region. By type, the market can be divided into cationic demulsifiers, anionic demulsifiers, and non-ionic demulsifiers. By application, it can be classified into oil and gas and shale gas segments. The regional segmentation includes North America (U.S., Canada), Latin America (Mexico), Europe (Germany), Asia Pacific (China), Middle East & Africa (Saudi Arabia).
Product Definition:
Oilfield Demulsifiers are chemicals that are used to prevent and break down the emulsion of water and oil in produced water. The importance of Oilfield Demulsifiers is to help reduce the amount of water production, which will in turn improve well productivity.
Cationic Demulsifiers:
Cationic demulsifiers are used for the treatment of water-based or oil-based drilling muds. They are added to the drilling fluid in order to remove metal ions and other particulate matter that may be carried into the wellbore with the cuttings. The addition of cationic demulsifiers results in a significant reduction in drill waste, which is expected to drive their demand over the forecast period.
Anionic Demulsifiers:
Anionic Demulsifiers are used in oilfield demulsifiers to remove the anion component from the water. The anion is mainly formed by sodium and chloride ions. It has a high affinity for oil molecules than for water molecules. Therefore, it can be removed from the aqueous phase by using anionic demulsifier which results in emulsion stabilization and less foam formation on reaction with acid rain or sulfuric acid rain.
Application Insights:
The oil and gas application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2017. The growth can be attributed to the increasing production of crude oil and natural gas from shale reserves across the world. In addition, growing investments by companies in exploration & production activities are expected to drive demand over the forecast period.
The product is used for drilling muds as it helps prevent formation water from entering into wellbore thereby avoiding costly remediation operations at wellsite. It also helps eliminate cemented zones which are prone to high permeability thus promoting efficient extraction of hydrocarbons with minimal capital expenditure (capex).
Regional Analysis:
North America was the leading regional market in 2017 and is expected to witness moderate growth over the forecast period. The U.S., being a major oil & gas producer, has witnessed significant demand for demulsifiers due to their use in drilling activities for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and hydraulic fracturing (HF). In addition, shale gas exploration activities have increased significantly owing to its high productivity from tight sands across North America thereby driving product demand.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for oilfield demulsifiers from the upstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry as a result of increasing exploration and production activities across the globe.
- Rising investments in refinery expansions, upgradation, and modernization projects to cater to the growing demand for petroleum products globally. This is expected to create opportunities for oilfield demulsifiers market players over the forecast period.
- Stringent environmental regulations pertaining to emissions from refineries are resulting in installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems which use demulsifiers for removing sulfur dioxide from exhaust gases. This is anticipated to boost growth of the global oilfield demulsifier market during the forecast period.
