Market Overview:

The global onshore oil and gas pipeline market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing demand for crude oil and natural gas across the globe. Additionally, the growing need for safe and reliable transportation of oil and gas products is also propelling the growth of this market. Onshore pipelines are used for transporting crude oil, natural gas, refined products, etc., over short or long distances. These pipelines are buried underground or laid above ground in trenches. They can be made of various materials such as steel, plastic, or concrete depending on their application and location. The global onshore oil and gas pipeline market can be segmented based on type, application, and region. Based on type, the market can be divided into ERW pipes (electric resistance welded), SSAW pipes (submerged arc welded), LSAW pipes (longitudinal submerged arc welded), and others (including spiral wound tubes). Based on application, the market can be classified into crude oil transmission lines; natural gas transmission lines; refined product transmission lines; gathering systems; processing plants & terminals; compressor stations & dehydration facilities; storage tanks & terminals; export/import facilities& marine terminals ;and others (including power generation plants).

Global Onshore Oil and Gas Pipeline Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

An onshore oil and gas pipeline is a pipeline that transports oil or gas from an offshore drilling rig or platform to a refinery, distribution center, or other destination on land. These pipelines are typically buried underground to avoid environmental damage and disruption. The importance of onshore oil and gas pipelines lies in their ability to safely transport large quantities of fossil fuels from offshore drilling rigs to coastal refineries.

ERW Pipes:

ERW pipes are extensively used in onshore oil and gas pipeline industry owing to its properties such as corrosion resistance, high strength, low thermal expansion coefficient and weldability. On the basis of product type, ERW pipes can be segmented into schedule 40 (SGL), schedule 80 (SGL & THV), and standard (PVC) steel pipe.

SSAW Pipes:

The SSAW pipes are manufactured using special alloys and have a low expansion ratio. The inside diameter of the pipe is normally larger than the outside diameter, thus providing an internal pressure to push oil or gas through the pipe. These pipes are installed in onshore oil and gas pipeline systems that transport crude oil from wellhead to processing facilities, refineries or petrochemical plants.

Application Insights:

The crude oil transmission segment dominated the global onshore oil and gas pipeline market in 2017. The segment is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing production of crude oil from various onshore fields across North America and Middle East & Africa. In addition, growing demand for transportation of this commodity is anticipated to drive the segment further.

Natural gas transmission accounted for a share of 24% in terms of volume in 2017 due to rising natural gas production from various sources, including shale reserves, coal beds methane (CBM) and conventional sources across Asia Pacific region as well as Russia & Ukraine region. Growing LNG imports into Europe are also projected to have a positive impact on market growth over the next eight years.

Refined products such as diesel, gasoline.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global onshore oil and gas pipeline market in 2016, accounting for a share of over 40.0%. The region is expected to witness moderate growth rate owing to the increasing development of shale plays in order to reduce dependency on imports from other regions. In addition, growing demand for natural gas as a substitute for coal coupled with stringent regulations by Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regarding carbon emissions is expected to drive the need for replacing aging infrastructure with new pipelines.

Asia Pacific accounted for over 20% of total revenue share in 2016 and is anticipated to grow at an exponential rate over the forecast period owing high growth potential along major corridors such as China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (Cpec), Iran-China Gas Pipeline Project, Myanmar-Thailand Natural Gas Pipeline Project among others.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for oil and gas due to population growth and industrialization in developing countries
  • Rising investment in oil and gas production by major exploration and production companies
  • Proliferation of new pipeline technologies that improve efficiency, safety, and environmental performance
  • Stringent regulations on emissions from the oil and gas industry driving investments in green infrastructure such as pipelines
  • Growing demand for natural gas as a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels
