Styrene is a colorless and flammable organic compound. It has a strong odor similar to that of plastic. It is soluble in alcohol, ether, and water but insoluble in tar. Styrene can be produced by the polymerization of ethylstyrene or by the addition of hydrogen gas into a solution of styrene monomer in acrylonitrile (AN) or acrylic acid (AA).


Coumarin is a type of flavoring agent derived from the plant Scopolia carniolica. It has been used in various food products and beverages as it imparts an aroma similar to vanilla. Coumarin can be extracted from different parts of the plant; however, its concentration is highest in the roots.
