Product Definition:


PCIe Switches are used to manage and direct traffic between devices on a PCIe bus. Gen1:


Gen1 is a physical interface specification for Ethernet switches. It was created as an alternative to the older SONET/SDH technology and provides better performance at lower cost over current technologies such as 10Gigabit Ethernet. The primary reason for creating Gen1 was to support 100Mb/s transmission speed in corporate networks, which is not possible with the existing SONET standards.


Currently, most of the enterprise switches manufactured are compatible with both Gen1.


Gen2:


Gen2 is a specification for networking hardware that was developed by Intel and Microsoft in 2010. It is an improvement over the original Gen1, which supports only Ethernet frames with 32-bit addresses and data rates of up to 100 Mbps. The new standard adds 40Gbps full-duplex optical interfaces to the existing 10Gbps bi-directional ports and increases port counts from 8x8 to 24x16, thereby increasing switching capacity by eight times while reducing board space by half.
