Global Perfluorinated Ion Exchange Resin Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Perfluorinated ion exchange resin is a synthetic resin that has been treated with perfluorinated compounds. It is used to remove fluoride ions from water.

Gel Type:

Gel type is a colloidal system of crosslinked polyacrylamide and acrylamide. It is formed by the interaction between polyacrylamide and acrylate ion, which are themselves dispersed in water or organic solvent. Gel-based ion exchange resins find application as high capacity media for large capacity reverse osmosis systems, ultrafiltration membranes, nanofiltration membranes or any other membrane with a pore size less than 5 nm.

Others:

Others are the other raw materials used in perfluorinated ion exchange resins. It includes hydrocarbon and their derivatives such as natural gas, crude oil, etc. The Others segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2017 to 2025 owing to its increasing demand for production of perfluorinated ion exchange resins (PIR).

Application Insights:

The water treatment application segment dominated the global market in terms of revenue share in 2017. This is attributed to growing demand for perfluorinated ion exchange resins from various industries, such as pulp and paper, oil and gas, wastewater treatment plants, etc. The product has excellent properties including high efficiency at low temperatures and high capacity for chemical reactivity which are likely to augment its demand over the forecast period.

Pharmacy application was the second largest segment accounting for a share of 22% in 2017 owing to increasing use of perfluorinated ion exchange resins (P-IERS) as pharmaceutical intermediates that offer enhanced stability against hydrolysis during storage at room temperature or below. In addition, these products have low toxicity towards humans resulting into increased usage across pharmacies globally.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global market in terms of revenue with a share of over 40.0% in 2017. This is attributed to growing environmental concerns and stringent government regulations regarding water treatment, which has led to an increase in demand for perfluorinated ion exchange resins across this region. In addition, increasing pharmaceutical industry coupled with rising healthcare expenditure by the government is expected to propel product demand over the forecast period.

Asia Pacific accounted for a significant share of global market revenue owing to rapid industrialization and urbanization resulting into increased population density along with growing need for improved municipal infrastructure have contributed significantly towards growth across this region since last few years.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for water treatment in various industries
  • Growing awareness about the benefits of using PFIER for water treatment
  • Rising investment in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment infrastructure
  • Technological advancements in PFIER manufacturing process
  • Growing demand from end-use industries such as power generation, oil & gas, and chemical
