Market Overview:

The global photochromic dyes market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for light control materials, sensor applications, and recording media. Photochromic dyes are used in a variety of applications such as sunglasses, eyeglasses, optical instruments, and windows. They are also used in medical devices and implants.

Global Photochromic Dyes Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A photochromic dye is a substance that changes color in response to light. Photochromic dyes are used in sunglasses, contact lenses, and other optical devices to protect the wearer's eyes from sunlight.

Azobenzenes:

Azobenzenes are organic compounds with the formula (N-Cbz-phenyl)cubes or monoclonal. They are highly soluble in diethyl ether, very slightly soluble in water and insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Azobenzene is a colorless liquid that gives a red reaction when exposed to light; it is also used as an intermediate for the preparation of dyes and pigments.

Spiropyrans:

Spiropyrans are organic compounds that are obtained from the fermentation of a strain of Streptomyces griseus. Spiropyran is a cyclic pyranocarbonyl macrocycle with five carbon rings and one oxygen ring, which has been used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other chemicals such as antibiotics, dyes, pigments & vitamins and also in pharmaceutical drugs.

Application Insights:

Light control materials application led the global photochromic dyes market in 2017. It is projected to expand at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period owing to rising demand from various end-use industries including automotive, construction, and electronics. Light control materials are used as color changing agents in automobile headlamps and other lighting systems that need to adapt dynamically according to prevailing light conditions for enhanced visibility and safety respectively.

The sensor applications segment is anticipated witness significant growth during the forecast period on account of growing demand for sensitive devices with high resolution that require low power consumption and long battery life cycles across various end-use industries such as healthcare, consumer electronics, industrial equipment etcetera.

Regional Analysis:

North America accounted for the largest share of global photochromic dyes market in 2017. The growth is attributed to the presence of a large number of manufacturers and suppliers coupled with high demand from various end-use industries such as display, lighting, automotive etc. In North America, U.S dominated the market owing to early adoption by major industry players coupled with technological advancements in display manufacturing processes over past few years.

Asia Pacific is expected to be one of fastest growing regions during forecast period owing to increasing awareness regarding light sensitive materials among consumers resulting into increased product application scope over past few years particularly in countries such as China.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for photochromic sunglasses from the sports and outdoor enthusiasts segment.
  • Growing popularity of photochromic eyeglasses among the working population, owing to its convenience and comfort features.
  • Proliferation of online retail channels that offer a wide range of photochromic products at competitive prices is aiding in market growth.
  • Rising awareness about the benefits of using photochromic lenses, especially among people with sensitive eyesight is propelling market growth.
