Market Overview:
The global plant based biosurfactants market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for bio-based surfactants from various end-use industries such as oil, medicine, food, cosmetics, daily chemical industry and home care. In addition, the growing awareness about the benefits of using plant based biosurfactants is also contributing to the growth of this market. Some of the major factors restraining the growth of this market are high production costs and limited availability of raw materials. Based on type, sophorolipid accounted for a majority share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its superior properties such as biodegradability and non-toxicity which make it suitable for use in various applications such as oilfield chemicals, personal care products and agrochemicals. Based on application, oil was estimated to account for a majority share in 2017 followed by medicine. However; cosmetics is projectedto witness highest CAGR overthe forecast period owingtoits growing demandfrom emerging economiessuchas Indiaand China .
Product Definition:
Biosurfactants are surface-active molecules produced by living cells. They are amphiphilic, meaning that they have both hydrophobic (water-hating) and hydrophilic (water-loving) properties. This makes them ideal for dissolving oils and other lipids, which is why biosurfactants are often used as detergents and cleaners. Plant based biosurfactants refers to biosurfactants derived from plants rather than animals or microorganisms.
Sophorolipid:
Sophorolipid is a naturally occurring surfactant found in the cell walls of certain bacteria. It has been reported that Sophorolipids are toxic to E. Coli and Salmonella, but not to human cells. The product is commercially available as a white amorphous powder and has an odor similar to garlic or onion when it's being prepared in laboratory scale production (as we do here at IGP).
Rhamnolipid:
Rhamnolipid is a naturally occurring surfactant found in the cells of plants. It has been reported to be effective in reducing surface tension and it's effectiveness increases when plant extract is concentrated. Rhamnolipids are characterized as non-toxic, water-soluble, and biodegradable with excellent stability under alkaline conditions (9 - 11).
Application Insights:
The daily chemical industry application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The rising demand for biosurfactants in this application as they help prevent corrosion, foaming, and scaling are expected to drive the market growth.
The oil segment is also anticipated to witness considerable growth over the next eight years owing to its growing usage in lubricant additives. Furthermore, increasing exploration activities coupled with an increase in production of crude oil will further propel product demand globally. Medicine was estimated as one of the fastest-growing segments due largely to its rising useage as a therapeutic agent across various disease categories such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer treatment drugs & nutraceuticals among others.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The region comprises emerging economies, such as China, India, Thailand and Indonesia. Increasing population coupled with rising living standards have spurred product demand from personal care products to food & beverage sector in this region.
China is one of the largest producers of natural rubber globally owing to its abundant supply and easy availability of raw materials at low cost. Natural rubber content in tires has witnessed a surge due to increasing demand for passenger cars and commercial vehicles across this country since past few years which will drive industry growth over the forecast period.
Europe was valued at USD X million in 2017 majorly driven by Germany which accounted for approximately 25% share of total consumption that year followed by France (20%) and U.K (15%).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for plant-based biosurfactants from the personal care and cosmetics industry on account of their biodegradability and non-toxicity.
- Growing awareness about the benefits of plant-based biosurfactants over synthetic surfactants, which is driving their adoption in various end-use industries.
- Rising investments by key players in research and development to develop novel plant-based biosurfactants products that meet the specific needs of different industries.
- Proliferation of ecofriendly initiatives across various sectors that are promoting the use of sustainable bio-based products, such as plant based biosurfactants
