Polyethylene oxide (PEO) is a polymer with the repeating unit -CH2-CH2-O-. It is also known as polyetheneoxide, polyoxyethylene, and PEOx. PEO has a molecular weight of 200,000 to 1,000,000. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and many organic solvents.

The MW of PEO is less than one million. It has a molecular weight range of approximately 300 to 35,000 Da. The molecular weight is the number associated with each polymer molecule. The lower the number, the higher will be its melting point and vice versa.


MW: 1-5 million:


MW: 1-5 million is a high molecular weight polyethylene oxide. It has been used as an adhesive in the medical industry and also finds application as a coating on metal surfaces to prevent corrosion. MW: 1-5 million is produced by polymerization of ethylene oxide with methanol, hydrogen or natural gas.


Application Insights:


The textile industry was the largest application segment in 2016 and accounted for a market share of more than 35% in 2017. The product is used as an additive to improve the mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of plastics. It is also used as a binder to strengthen fibers during manufacturing processes such as melt spinning and molding. PEOs are water-soluble polymers that can be easily modified by changing the composition or processing conditions which makes them suitable for use in various applications including textiles, films & sheets, footwear soles/liners/tops (SBS), coatings & adhesives from laminates to high-pressure laminate systems (SBS).


Polyethylene oxide units are added to SBS resins along with plasticizers so that they form strong bonds with metals such as aluminum on account of their electrostatic charge affinity.
