A type of foam insulation made from polyimide, a plastic with high heat resistance. Polyimide foam is used for applications where high temperatures are present, such as in the aerospace and automotive industries. It can also be used as a sound insulation material.


Flexible Polyimide Foam:


Flexible polyimide foam is a closed-cell, flexible, thermoplastic polyurethane insulation material that exhibits superior properties including high thermal conductivity and low thermal capacity. It has applications in various end-use industries including transportation (automotive & aerospace), electrical & electronics, building & construction and packaging.


Rigid Polyimide Foam:


Rigid polyimide foam is a closed-cell, non-resilient material with high thermal conductivity and low density. Rigid polyimide foam has applications in electrical insulation, chemical resistance, and as an insulating layer in various industries including automotive & transportation, aerospace & defense and building & construction among others.


Application Insights:


Aircraft and aerospace was the largest application segment in 2017. The product is widely used in aircraft interiors owing to its thermal insulation properties. It is also used for noise reduction, vibration damping, and as a fuel barrier in the wings and fuselage of an aircraft. Polyimide foam provides support to weak structural components of an aircraft which results in increased safety margins during flight operations.


The use of polyimide foam helps reduce maintenance costs on account of reduced weight compared to conventional materials such as metal or composite materials, thereby reducing fuel consumption during take-off and landing phases resulting into lower carbon emissions due to reduced fuel consumption by around 15%. These factors are expected to drive demand over the forecast period from 2018 to 2030.
