Global Polypropylene (PP) Lined Pipes Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Polypropylene (PP) lined pipes are used to protect the inner surface of the pipe from corrosion. The polypropylene lining also helps to reduce friction and increase the life of the pipe.

4-12 inches:

4-12 inches polypropylene lined pipes are used for water and wastewater treatment applications. They have a smaller inside diameter as compared to the outside diameter which makes them suitable for use in plumbing applications where they come in contact with surfaces such as sinks, bathtubs, toilets, and countertops.

12-24 inches:

12-24 inches is the standard size of polypropylene lined pipes. It is also known as PP lining pipe, plastic piping or PVC piping. 12-24 inches wide and up to 40 feet long it can be used for water plumbing, hydronic heating & cooling and gas plumbing applications in residential homes, commercial buildings and industrial plants.

Application Insights:

The oil & gas industry was the largest application segment in 2017 and accounted for a market share of more than 35% in terms of volume. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for petroleum products across the globe. Polypropylene (PP) lined pipes are used as casing and tubing inside wells, onshore and offshore platforms, processing plants, storage facilities, pipelines etc. They are also used as part of fluid catalytic cracking units at petrochemical plants along with other polymers such as ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH), EVA where high temperature resistance is required.

Polypropylene lining provides protection against chemicals including hydrocarbons & acids which may cause corrosion or damage to other materials if they come into contact with them.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounted for a share of more than 60% of total demand in 2017 owing to high product penetration in China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. In addition, rising construction activities due to growing population are likely to drive the regional market further.

The North America market was valued at USD X million in 2017 and is projected to grow at an estimated CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing with increasing oil & gas E&P activities mainly across U.S., Canada as well as Mexico which are major consumers of polypropylene pipes for transfer fluids such as water-based drilling muds or oils used during flowback operations after drilling wells.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from water and wastewater management sector: The global water and wastewater management market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2016 to 2021. This is mainly due to the increasing population, rapid industrialization, and urbanization in emerging economies. PP-lined pipes are used for transporting potable water, sewage effluent, sludge etc., which makes them an essential part of the water and wastewater management infrastructure.
  • Growing construction industry: The global construction industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5% from 2016 to 2021. This growth can be attributed to the increasing investments in infrastructure development by governments across the world coupled with rising private sector participation in this space. PP-lined pipes are extensively used in various segments of the construction industry such as plumbing, HVAC systems etc., making it one of the fastest growing markets for PP-lined pipes globally.
