Market Overview:
The global power line communication market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for broadband services and the growing need for energy management and smart grid applications. Additionally, the increasing demand for indoor networking applications is also contributing to the growth of this market. However, factors such as interference caused by other electronic devices and limited bandwidth are restraining the growth of this market. On basis of type, narrowband accounted for majority share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during forecast period owing to its low cost as compared with broadband services. On basis of application, energy management & smart grid held largest share in 2017 followed by indoor networking applications; however, other application segments are projected to exhibit highest CAGR during forecast period owingto rising adoption rates across various industry verticals.
Product Definition:
Power line communication (PLC) is a technology used to carry data on a conductor that is also carrying an alternating current (AC) electrical signal. PLC devices are used to send and receive signals between two or more points in a power grid, without the need for dedicated wiring.
Narrowband:
Narrowband is a range of frequencies between 4.6 GHz and 6 GHz, typically used in wireless local area networks (WLANs). The growth factor for narrowband is its ability to provide high-speed data transmission over existing power lines. It can support up to 100 devices connected through the electrical wires of an estate, building or city block.
Broadband:
The Broadband is a range of frequencies that are generally between 0 and 10 GHz. It is used to transmit data over short distances using the Power Line Communication (PLC). The PLC technology uses electrical power lines for communication. These power lines can carry data, voice, and video signals. Therefore, broadband allows high-speed communication with very small physical spaces between the transmitting and receiving devices.
Application Insights:
The global power line communication market has been segmented into indoor networking, energy management and smart grid, other applications. The indoor networking segment dominated the overall market in terms of revenue share in 2017. This is attributed to the growing demand for high-speed wireless networks at home and work places owing to factors such as increasing use of smartphones, rising number of multinational companies having offices across the globe, rapid urbanization coupled with industrialization creating a huge demand for electricity have all contributed to this growth. Moreover, PLC systems are being installed at bus stands railway stations and airports so that they can directly transfer information about passenger movements via radio waves thereby reducing human efforts. Such trends are expected to drive industry growth over the forecast period especially in developed economies like North America and Europe where there is a higher penetration rate of broadband internet connections compared with developing regions like Asia Pacific where it is still evolving as an access technology due to lack of infrastructure development which will eventually drive industry expansion over next eight years globally.
Regional Analysis:
North America is expected to be the key regional market over the forecast period owing to early adoption of technologies in various sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and others. The region accounted for a revenue share of more than 35% in 2017 and is estimated to grow at a significant CAGR over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness substantial growth during the forecast years on account of increasing demand from end-use industries such as energy management and smart grid. Increasing penetration rates for power line communication systems are also driving industry expansion across this region. Moreover, rising investments by governments in developing countries are likely to contribute significantly towards market growth during the projected time frame.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for data-intensive services such as 4K video, AR/VR, and IoT is expected to boost the market growth.
- Proliferation of smart devices and the growing trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is also anticipated to fuel the demand for power line communication technology in the near future.
- Rapid urbanization and increasing investments in smart city initiatives are likely to create new opportunities for power line communication market players over the next few years.
- Stringent government regulations pertaining to energy efficiency are likely to propel the adoption of power line communication technology across various industry verticals in coming years.
