Market Overview:
The global pressure-treated wood market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for pressure-treated wood in various applications, such as interior and exterior applications. In terms of type, the hardwoods segment is expected to dominate the global pressure-treated wood market during the forecast period, owing to its properties such as high durability and resistance against decay and pests. In terms of region, North America is expected to lead the global pressure-treated wood market during the forecast period due to rising demand from construction and infrastructure sectors in this region.
Product Definition:
Pressure-treated wood is lumber that has been treated with a preservative under high pressure in order to protect it from rot, decay and insects. The preservative is usually a water-based solution of copper naphthenate or chromated copper arsenate. Pressure-treated lumber is important for outdoor projects such as decks, fences and retaining walls, because it resists weathering and decay much better than untreated lumber.
Hardwoods:
Hardwood is the name given to any tree-borne woody plant, of the angiosperms or gymnosperms families. The term hardwood is generally used for trees that are used for industrial purposes and not just residential timber. Some hardwood species are also available in low (milled) and high (sawed) grades; these vary with respect to density and strength as well as some aesthetic characteristics such as color & grain pattern.
Softwoods:
Softwood is a term used for trees that are not fully matured, or have not reached their full potential. The softwood market is driven by the demand from the construction industry and furniture manufacturing sector. Softwoods can be categorized into two types as hardwood and softwood. Hard wood includes species such as oak, maple, rosewood; while soft wood includes pine, cedar, spruce etc.
Application Insights:
Pressure-treated wood finds application in both interior and exterior applications. The exterior applications include construction of bridges, highways, buildings and others. Bridge building is the major application segment for this product as it can support heavy load owing to its ability to resist moisture content changes over a wide range of temperatures.
The interior applications mainly comprise residential construction including flooring, paneling & siding components, moldings & trims and other niche products such as decorative laminates or veneers on account of its uniform texture throughout the board which makes it suitable for use in various projects such as kitchen cabinets or bathroom remodeling projects.
In terms of revenue, the interior application segment dominated North America with a share estimated at around 55% in 2017 followed by Asia Pacific at around 35%.
Regional Analysis:
North America was the largest market for pressure-treated wood, accounting for a share of more than 30.0% in 2017. The U.S., in particular, is one of the major consumers owing to its strong construction industry growth over the past few years and increasing demand from residential as well as commercial applications.
Asia Pacific is projected to be one of the fastest-growing regions with a CAGR exceeding 5% during the forecast period on account of rapid urbanization coupled with growing population and infrastructure development activities in emerging economies such as China.
Europe has been witnessing steady growth due to increased spending by consumers on house remodeling activities which has resulted into high product demand across countries such as Germany, France, Italy etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from construction and infrastructure sectors
- Rising demand from the residential sector
- Growth in the housing market
- Expansion of the global furniture market
- Technological advancements
