Market Overview:
The global pulse oximetry monitoring market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of respiratory diseases, technological advancements in pulse oximetry devices, and rising demand for home-based care. Based on type, the hospital pulse oximetry monitoring segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global pulse oximetry monitoring market in 2018. This segment is also projected to grow at a higher CAGR than other segments during the forecast period. The large share and high growth rate of this segment can be attributed to factors such as growing number of hospitals and increasing demand for advanced medical technologies. Based on application, adult patients are expected to account for the largest share of the global pulse oximetry monitoring market in 2018.
Product Definition:
Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive technique used to measure the oxygen saturation of arterial blood. A pulse oximeter probe is attached to a patient's finger, earlobe, or toe and measures the percentage of hemoglobin molecules in the patient's blood that are carrying oxygen. The probe emits light at two different wavelengths, red and infrared. These wavelengths are absorbed by hemoglobin molecules differently depending on whether they are carrying oxygen or not. The pulse oximeter calculates the difference between the amounts of light absorbed at these two wavelengths and uses this information to determine the patient's SpO2 (oxygen saturation).
Pulse oximetry monitoring is important because it provides an accurate measurement of a patient's SpO2 which can be used to assess their level of hypoxemia (low blood oxygen levels) and help guide treatment decisions.
Hospital Pulse Oximetry Monitoring:
Hospital pulse oximetry monitoring is a new term in the oximeter industry. It was created to provide an accurate description of oxygen saturation levels being recorded by noninvasive pulse oximeters used in hospitals and clinics. The technique has been around for about 10 years, but only recently has it begun to receive widespread attention due to its accuracy and cost-effectiveness compared with invasive methods such as arterial blood gases (ABG) analysis or capnography.
Alternate Care Pulse Oximetry Monitoring:
Alternate care pulse oximetry monitoring is a method used to measure the arterial oxygen saturation level in patients suffering from respiratory failure, cardiac arrest or severe airway obstruction. This system works on the basis of pulse-oximeters and utilizes infrared light for noninvasive assessment of tissue coloration. The process is cost-effective as compared to invasive methods such as capnography and uses less sensitive equipment that can be easily obtained by almost all age groups including children.
Application Insights:
The pulse oximeter market is segmented based on application into child, adult and old patients. The old patients are more susceptible to hypoxia which requires pulse oximetry monitoring for adequate oxygen supply. Monitoring of the old patient¢â‚¬â„¢s blood flow through capillaries is necessary to measure the adequacy of oxygen supply as well as to check any kind of fall in hemoglobin level.
Pulse oximeters are used for a variety of applications including emergency care, home healthcare, critical care and sleep laboratories among others. In hospitals, they find wide application in emergency rooms (ER), operating room (OR) and intensive care units (ICU). They also find use outside hospitals such as at sports events where there is risk of low blood pressure or trauma cases requiring immediate medical attention by providing real-time data regarding the patient¢â‚¬â„¢s condition.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to a rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases and an increase in healthcare expenditure. Moreover, favorable reimbursement policies are also expected to drive the regional market over the forecast period. The Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth during the forecast period due to rising geriatric population and awareness about pulse oximetry monitoring systems among patients, physicians, and hospitals. Furthermore, increasing disposable income levels will boost demand for medical devices such as OEM circuit boards that incorporate pulse oximeters over this period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of respiratory diseases: The increasing incidence of respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia is one of the major growth drivers for the pulse oximetry monitoring market. This is because pulse oximetry helps in early diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
- Rising geriatric population: The rising geriatric population is another major growth driver for the pulse oximetry monitoring market. This is because elderly people are more susceptible to respiratory disorders and other health conditions that can be monitored using pulse oximetry devices.
- Technological advancements: The technological advancements in pulse oximeters are another key factor driving the growth of this market. For instance, recent advances include miniaturization of devices, incorporation of Bluetooth technology into devices for wireless data transmission, and development of novel algorithms for improved accuracy and performance of devices.
