Product Definition:
Quicklime is a calcium oxide (CaO) powder. Slaked lime is a water-slaked calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) powder. Hydraulic lime is a type of lime that, when mixed with water, forms a paste that binds to building materials such as brick and stone.
Quicklime:
Quicklime, also known as calcium oxide or caustic lime, is a chemical compound. It has a strong smell of garlic and burns readily when exposed to air. Quicklime is produced by the thermal decomposition of limestone at approximately 800oC (1472oF). Limestone accounts for about 65% of the quick- lime production process; the remaining 35% comes from gypsum which is treated with acid and water.
Slaked Lime:
Slaked lime is a hydrated calcium oxide, also known as quicklime or slaked lime. It is produced by mixing limestone with water at high pressure and temperature. Lime (calcium oxide) when mixed with water to the desired strength of cement becomes cement; when mixed with too much water it forms a weak solution called limewater.
Application Insights:
The other application segment includes water treatment, air pollution control, chemical synthesis and others. Quicklime is used as a reactant in the preparation of various chemicals such as chlor alkali metal silicates, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate and hydroxide slurry etc. It is also used for wastewater treatment by providing an initial high pH value to the water which helps in reducing corrosion and improving suspended solids removal. The product has an increasing demand for air pollution control owing to its ability to reduce oxides of sulfur (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). In addition it reduces hydrocarbons (HC) emissions from combustion along with eliminating particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter.
Hydraulic lime is primarily used for hydraulic cement production where it acts as a modifier by accelerating hydration process between cement paste particles thereby making them less susceptible to interstitial penetration during setting process.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounted for a volume share of over 57% in 2017 owing to high product demand from various industries, including chemical, metallurgical and construction. China is one of the largest producers as well as consumers of quicklime globally. It has large reserves of limestone which are mined by hand using traditional methods.
