Market Overview:

The global rare earth compounds market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for rare earth compounds in various applications such as catalysts, ceramics, phosphors, metal alloys and magnets. Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region during the forecast period owing to the presence of major manufacturing hubs for these applications.

Global Rare Earth Compounds Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Rare earth compounds are a type of chemical compound that contains one or more rare earth elements. These elements are typically found in the Earth's crust in concentrations of less than 100 parts per million. Rare earth compounds have a variety of applications, including use in lasers, fluorescent lights, and rechargeable batteries. They are also used to produce catalysts for oil refining and petrochemical processing.

Cerium:

Cerium is a chemical element that occurs in nature as the oxide ore. It was first discovered in 1803 and named after the Latin word for 'acid-free'. Cerium (III) oxide is used as an additive to rare earth metal alloys to improve their hardness. The product also finds application in glass, ceramics, and detergents industries.

Neodymium:

Neodymium is a chemical element, which is located in the periodic table next to yttrium and lanthanum. It has the symbol Nd and atomic number 60. The softness of neodymium makes it an excellent material for use in magnetic applications; it can also be used as a glass-former in windows, etc.

Application Insights:

Ceramics was the dominant application segment in 2017 and accounted for a revenue share of more than 40.0% in the market. The cerium oxide catalyst is used extensively in chemical industries to produce ethylene glycol, which is subsequently utilized as a raw material for manufacturing ceramic tiles, bathroom fittings and other sanitary ware products. Neodymium magnets are widely used in hard disk drives as they have high strength and NIB (Neodymium-Iron-Boron) coating makes them resistant to corrosion caused by oxygen or moisture inside the magnetic storage media.

The metal alloys segment is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand from various end-use industries including construction, automotive & transportation, electrical & electronics sectors among others.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global rare earth compounds market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. China accounted for a share of more than 70% of global production owing to large scale mining activities as well as high demand from various end-use industries such as automotive, electronics, etc. in this region. The growing manufacturing sector across emerging economies such as India and China is also anticipated to propel product demand over the next eight years.

The European market was valued at USD X million in 2016.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for rare earth compounds in various end-use industries such as electronics, automotive, and aerospace
  • Rising production of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles which require rare earth compounds for their functioning
  • Growing investments in research and development activities for the discovery of new applications of rare earth compounds
  • Proliferation of nanotechnology that is fueling the demand for rare earth nanoparticles
  • Stringent environmental regulations compelling companies to use more efficient and environment-friendly technologies that require rare earth compounds
