Market Overview:

The global rare earth market is expected to grow from USD XX million in 2018 to USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of X.X%. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for rare earths from various applications such as automotive, aerospace & defense, power generation, consumer goods & electronics, industrial machinery, and other applications. Asia Pacific is expected to dominate the global rare earth market during the forecast period.

Global Rare Earth Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A rare earth metal is a member of the group of 17 elements that make up the lanthanide series on the periodic table. These metals are all relatively scarce in nature, which is why they're called "rare earths." The most common rare earth metals are cerium, neodymium and lanthanum.

The term "rare earth" can also be used to describe certain minerals that contain one or more of these metals. Rare earth minerals are found in many parts of the world, but China is currently the leading producer.

Rare-earth Sintered Magnet:

Rare earth is a generic name for 17 elements, which are located in several groups. Some of these elements are yttrium (Y), cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr) and dysprosium (Dy). These metals have very specific properties; they are hard to find and expensive to extract. They occur in nature, but their concentration is too low for practical use.

Rare-earth Bonded Magnet:

Rare earth bonded magnets are permanent magnets, whose magnetic properties can be varied by changing the alloying element from ferrous to rare earth elements. The most widely used rare earth element is neodymium.

Application Insights:

The application segment includes automotive, aerospace & defense, power generation, consumer goods and electronics, industrial machinery and other applications. The automotive sector accounted for the largest share in 2015 owing to the high demand from various electric vehicles (EV) manufacturers. The increasing penetration of EVs is expected to drive the rare earth market over the forecast period as these magnets provide clean energy storage solution with high efficiency that is required in large quantities for EV applications.

Rare-earth magnets are used in numerous appliances including washing machines and dishwashers because of their ability to cut down on water consumption while providing efficient cleaning performance. These products also have a number of environmental benefits since they consume less energy during operation compared with standard motors due to their higher efficiency levels which can go up to 90%. This factor along with rising awareness about environment protection coupled with growing concerns regarding global warming will drive product demand over the next eight years or so from this industry vertical.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global rare earth market in 2016 with a share of over 74%. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. China is one of the leading producers and consumers of rare earth Elements (REE) in Asia Pacific. The country has huge reserves of REE which are still untapped, thus making it a key player in global markets.

The growing manufacturing sector coupled with high domestic demand from China is expected to drive growth across Asia Pacific during the forecast period. Growing investments by foreign players such as Molycorp and Lynas Corporation into Asian Rare Earth Element (AREE) projects will also contribute towards future growth across this region.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from the electronics industry for rare earth elements (REE) due to the miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles.
  • The rising demand for clean energy has led to an increase in the use of REEs in wind turbines and solar panels.
  • Growing awareness about the importance of REEs in various industrial applications is driving their adoption, which is likely to result in higher demand over time.
  • Stringent environmental regulations on mining and production are resulting in a limited supply of REEs, which is likely to push up prices and encourage exploration activities by companies operating within this market space.
