Market Overview:
The global rubber ingredients market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for tires and non-tires applications across the globe. In terms of type, the vulcanizing agent segment is expected to lead the global rubber ingredients market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its properties such as cross-linking ability, which helps in improving tire durability and resistance against heat and ozone degradation.
Product Definition:
The most important rubber ingredients are the elastomers, which are long-chain polymers that can be stretched repeatedly without breaking.
Vulcanizing Agent:
Vulcanizing agent is a chemical added to rubber for improving its strength and durability. Vulcanization process involves heating of synthetic rubber in the presence of carbon dioxide which leads to crosslinking between polymer chains, thus increasing its tensile strength and toughness.
Rubber ingredients are mixed with vulcanizing agents before they are processed into finished products such as tires, hoses & cables, mats & flooring and other industrial rubber products.
Protective Agent:
A protective agent is a chemical that reduces the rate of oxidation in rubber. It has two major functions, namely to prevent the formation of radicals and to inhibit or delay the polymerization process. The product also helps in maintaining flexibility and strength during vulcanization.
Application Insights:
Tire was the largest application segment in 2017 and accounted for a market share of over 70%. The global rubber ingredients market is anticipated to witness significant growth on account of increasing demand for tires across various end-use industries. Tire manufacturers are focusing on innovation to meet the rising consumer requirements, which in turn will drive the industry growth.
The non-tire applications include automotive, industrial and construction as well as other applications such as footwear and clothing. These segments collectively accounted for a revenue share of around 15% in 2017 owing to growing use of natural rubber products with high performance characteristics that cannot be achieved with synthetic products only. However, synthetic products have higher durability than natural ones so their use is limited mostly to premium quality tires where safety & performance matter more than comfort does.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest market in 2016 and accounted for a share of over 45%. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. Increasing population, rapid urbanization, rising disposable income levels coupled with government support are some of the key factors responsible for promoting industry growth in Asia Pacific. Rubber raw material availability is also likely to be a favorable factor for regional growth as it provides access to nearly limitless supply of natural rubber from plantations in Thailand and Malaysia.
Europe held significant market share owing to high demand from tire manufacturers on account of increasing vehicle production globally. North America emerged as one of the major consumers due to growing demand from non-tire applications such as industrial hoses and belts along with other ancillary applications such as packing materials used by food processing industries or medical bags & containers made by automotive manufacturers themselves are likely substitutes for tires thus reducing product consumption thereby affecting industry dynamics negatively across North America during the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for rubber ingredients in the automotive industry as a result of the increasing production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
- Rising demand from the construction sector owing to growth in infrastructure development activities across the globe.
- Growing use of rubber ingredients in medical applications on account of their properties such as elasticity, durability, and biocompatibility.
- Increasing consumption of rubber ingredients in electrical & electronics applications due to rising demand for consumer electronics products globally.
