Satellite phones are communication devices that send and receive phone calls and text messages from a satellite orbiting in space. Satellite phones are designed to work anywhere, including the most remote areas of the earth. With a satellite phone, users can make or receive voice calls from almost any location on earth as long as they have an unobstructed line of sight with the sky. With text messaging, users can communicate almost anywhere in the world. The first satellite phone was launched in 1982 by NASA. The handsets were large and had limited battery life and bandwidth, but they were the only way to make a call if you were out of range of traditional ground-based communication networks. In 1994, Motorola introduced the first satellite phone for consumers with lower weight than previous models and increased battery life. The phones could also be used to send SMS messages (text messages). In 2001, Motorola introduced Iridium 9505A Extreme Mobile Satellite Communication device with voice capability. These phones used analog signals on low Earth orbit satellites which made them cheaper than previous models because they require less power to transmit signals from space station to earth ground stations for transmission back into space through other satellites or directly into user's handset antennas. In 2003, Motorola created a digital technology called Digital AMPS which enabled Iridium 9505A Extreme Mobile Satellite Communication devices to transmit data at much faster rates than analog devices such as those that use TDMA or CDMA technology so that users could access data services like email and web browsing through their handsets. This allowed users more access time while not using up precious minutes on their monthly charge plan limit or costly text messaging charges when roaming internationally outside of coverage areas on land based networks.
