Control valves are used for the control of liquid flow rate and level in a pipeline. The most common type is the butterfly valve, in which a disk rotates to change the passageway through which fluid flows. However, other types include ball valves and gate valves. Diaphragm valves are used for controlling compressed air or gas flow into, out of, or within an apparatus. A control valve is a device that regulates the passage of fluid (liquid or gas) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. A gate valve is an example of a control valve. Positive-displacement valves are self-contained units which regulate flow rates without moving parts. They tend to be more expensive than other types but can provide very accurate metering of fluids. Diaphragm valves do not use springs like other types; rather they use flexible diaphragms driven by either air pressure differential across them (e.g., pneumatic), solenoids actuating them (e.g., hydraulic), or cogwheels rotating them open and closed (e.g., mechanical). The reason for this design is because there would usually be no spring force available from compressed air sources which might otherwise cause leakage when not fully pressurized; conversely solenoids can maintain full force on springs even when voltage supply fluctuates wildly according to load changes; rotary cogs will have constant pressure as long as they have sufficient teeth engaged with each other regardless of how much torque is applied to drive them - say from electric motors with varying power levels - so that force does not vary according to torque input and leakage will still be prevented due to constant pressure inside pipe being maintained no matter what happens with input power supply voltage fluctuations .
