A global scanning electron microscope, or SEM, is a type of electron microscope that can image surfaces at a very high magnification. SEMs use an electron beam to generate the images and are more capable than light microscopes in many ways. SEMs use a beam of electrons to scan the surface of an object. The electron beam can also be used to analyze and map every point on a surface, or make images with incredible detail. This is in contrast to light microscopes which are not as good at generating high-resolution images. An SEM may also be used for chemical analysis or cross-sectioning purposes, after which data are obtained through image processing techniques. The most common SEMs are scanning electron microscopes. They use a beam of electrons to create an image on the photographic plate, which means that they can form images with higher resolutions than light microscopes.
