The ballast water system on a ship is responsible for taking in and discharging water to maintain the vessel's stability. Ballast tanks are used to adjust a ship's draft (the depth of the vessel below the surface of the water) and trim (the angle at which a ship sits in the water).

Ultra-Violet (UV) is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum with a longer wavelength than visible light, but shorter than X-rays. UV is subdivided into two types - UVC and UVB, based on their wavelengths. UVC has a wavelength of 200 -280 nm and can cause sunburn like effects on human skin if it's exposure is prolonged; while UVB has a wavelength of 280 -320 nm and causes damage to plant cells.


Electrochemical:


Electrochemical is the branch of chemistry that deals with chemical reactions between two or more electrodes and an electrolyte. In a ship's ballast water system, electrochemical processes are used to treat waste water generated in the course of loading and unloading at ports. Electrolytic treatment can be carried out in several ways; however, most systems use a single-pass method where saltwater is passed through a copper coil wound around an iron core.
